Welcome to our popcorn stitch tutorial. Here you will find step-by-step instructions that will help you master the popcorn stitch, which is used in many different crochet patterns. However, you’ll need to know some basics first, so check out my tutorials for both the single crochet stitch and the double crochet stitches before you attempt this one.
A row of popcorns is the perfect stitch if you want to add a pop of texture to any crochet project. There are several variations too, like a single crochet popcorn stitch as well as the double crochet popcorn stitch, which can be used as a solid block of texture in a larger project, especially when using a heavier yarn weight, like in a blanket, for example.
Don’t confuse a popcorn stitch with a puff stitch, however. While they both will add texture, rows of popcorn stitches are very different from their puff stitch counterparts.
So find your favorite hook, and let’s start at the beginning with the first stitch of the starting chain of a popcorn stitch.

Popcorn Stitch: Step-by-Step Guide
Before we start, here are the abbreviations we will use in the pattern:
Sk: skip
St: stitch
Next st: Next stitch
Ch st: chain stitches
Last ch: Last chain
Next ch: Next chain
DC: double crochet
DC cluster: three double crochet stitches worked in the same stitch
Now, let’s get started with this photo tutorial for creating a popcorn stitch.
In these written instructions, the stitch will be worked in rows. To start, after making a slipknot, chain your preferred number of Ch st together in a foundation change. From your foundation chain, you will need an even number of multiple stitches for this stitch pattern.
First row: Chain 1 to start. Now work 1 single crochet into each st. You will start in the second chain on the hook when doing this.
Second row: Into the first st, you will need to work in a single crochet. * Now popcorn into the following stitch, and for the next stitch, single crochet.
By working five DC st into the same stitch, you can make a popcorn stitch. Take the hook from the loop, now put it through the top section of the set’s first DC st, and grab the loop you took off the hook earlier. Pull that through the top section of the first DC st to form the popcorn stitch.
Third row: Into the first st, use a single crochet st and then also for each st across. Now chain one and turn.
For the rest of the pattern: Repeat the second and third rows for as long as needed, depending on the project. Once complete, fasten, and secure by weaving the ends in.
Practice a few times and then you’ll have mastered the popcorn stitch in no time! Incorporate this stitch in your favorite crochet projects to get a really fun texture.
