Waffle stitches are a great way to add texture to baby blankets, scarves, or dishcloths. Adding features like the waffle stitch can provide extra definition and distinction to your crocheted items. If you’d like to try your hand at stitching other textured, decorative, and gathered stitches, I’ll share some tutorials at the end of this post.

How To Make a Waffle Crochet Stitch: Step-By-Step

Materials Needed:

-Crochet hook (Here’s a guide to pick the right size mm crochet hook here)

-Yarn (choose your favorite color and worsted weight cotton yarn based on what you want to create)

-Scissors to snip your yarn when finished

-Darning needle to finish off your ends

Steps:

Step 1: Foundation Chain & Single Crochet Row

The waffle stitch works with a foundation row chained in multiples of 3 for your desired width and add 2. The number of stitches I used for this sample was 21 st + 2. To begin, insert your hook into a slip stitch(sl st) to crochet a starting chain. Start here if you need help understanding how to create a foundation chain(labeled as ch ongoing).

Step 2: Row 1

Insert the hook into the third stitch from the hook and do a double crochet(will be further labeled as dc. Get the dc stitches instructions here.) Next, make 1 DC in each ch across.

Waffle stitches are not only a beautiful texture but fun to create too!

Step 3: Row 2 Double Crochet With Front Post Stitches

Row two begins by chaining 3 (this always counts as 1 dc) and turning your work. Across this row, you’ll repeat the set of *one front post double crochet(fpdc) and 2 dc until you reach the end placing a dc in the last st.

Step 4: Row 3 More Double Crochet With Front Post Stitches

As before ch 3 to count as your first dc of row three and turn your work. Then, across this row, you’ll repeat the set of *1 dc and 2 fpdc until the end, placing a dc in each of the last two stitches.

Step 5: Row 4 and Beyond & Finishing the Waffle Stitch

Continue repeating rows 2 and 3 until your project is the desired length. Once you reach the desired length, fasten off and cut the yarn, but end the waffle stitch by stopping on a “row 2” for a neater finish.

Note: Keep in mind that we’ve described the double crochet stitch in US terms; the equivalent in UK terms is a treble crochet stitch.
