Easy Crochet Heart Garland Pattern

Posted by  ·  February 3, 2018  ·  Last Updated: January 13, 2019

Make a festive crochet heart garland for your home. It is a super quick Valentines decoration….however I must tell you I gave this to my husband for a handmade Valentine’s gift and we have left in hanging in our room all year long! If you like to crochet you might like to whip up my free easy crochet rose pattern. So pretty and easy.  I also have a jumbo crochet flower! Flowers are one of my favorite things to crochet. I have made a roundup of some of the most beautiful crochet flower patterns. Be sure to check it out.

easy crochet heart garland

These crochet hearts work together quickly! In no time you can have a bunch of hearts. Just vary the size of hook and type of yarn to make different sized hearts.  I made these colorful crochet hearts with Lily Sugar ‘n Cream.  I do love working in this yarn! It makes awesome crochet dishcloths, granny square dishcloths, and crochet dish sponges.

easy crochet heart

Pattern adapted from this basic heart pattern.

For the crochet heart garland, I used size J crochet hook and worsted weight yarn.

Easy Crochet Heart

Round 1

Chain 4.  Make all of the next stitches in the first chain. 3 trc, 3 dc, chain 1, 1 trc, chain 1, 3 dc, 3 trc, chain 2 slip stitch

Round 2

Chain 3, in first trc make sc and hdc, in next stitch 3 hdc, in next stitch 2 hdc, sc in next four stitches, chain 1 dc in trc, chain 1, sc in next four stitches, 2 hdc in next stitch, 3 hdc in next stitch, hdc and sc in next stitch, chain 3 and slip stitch in center

Round 3

Chain 3, sc in top of chain 3 from the previous row, sc in each stitch all the way around (until chain 3 from the previous row).  I chained one at the tip of the heart to get around the point easier. At beginning of chain 3 from previous row chain three and slip stitch in center of the heart.  Pull the loop to the back and fasten off.

Inspired Crochet Designs wrote me and said that if you make the following changes on Round 3 it will keep the top of the heart from curling. Used (2sc in next st) twice around the bumps of the heart in the last row. and it totally got rid of the curling edges. If you have trouble with curling this it is worth a try.  It was easier for me to sc all the way around (chain one at the point of the heart).

How to make an easy crochet heart garland

Chain 45, in top of heart sc, chain 6, sc in top of  other side of the heart, chain 12, sc in top of heart, chain 6, sc in top of other side of the heart, chain 12. Repeat until all hearts are joined, chain 45 fasten off.

easy crochet heart garland

These crochet hearts are perfect for these darling crochet heart hair clips, my crochet coffee cozy, and this heart crochet hair clip.

One of my most favorite crochet patterns is the easy crochet rose! You will have to give it a try.

Hi - love the pattern but can't see how to print it off without copying and pasting it to word or pressing control and print and it saying it will be 28 pages? Please is there a print pdf just hiding behind an ad or something? Thank you.

For those who are asking about all the abbreviations of the stitches or how to do them, there are numerous ones on Pinterest that show in detail, the abbreviations for each stitch and directions, even videos. They are great to pin and just keep where you can refer to them. I know I haven't done double and triple crochets in awhile so had to refresh myself so I pinned one of them.

Also people are referring to these as small hearts but mine is 4" across at the widest place. Is this the size they're supposed to be.I used worsted weight yarn (medium) and an I hook

I'm from Brasil and we do not have a Valentine's day. We have boy/girlfriends day and it's on June 13th. Anyway I love hearts and love crochet as well. I'm now at almost 65 but I learned crochet all by myself when I was preagnant of my 37 y.o. daughter. From then I never stopped crocheting. But as I get old I'm not able to do longtime stuff. I'd reather do little pieces so hearts are my favorite or some baby clothing.

Thank you for sharing your pattern. I have a question on the directions. In the 2nd round it is stated to chain 3, do we chain three in the same space we did the slip stitch?

    Thanks Rhonda

I just realized this morning its Valentine's Day! My Mom is in the local Care Center after a massive stroke in November of 2009. I found this pattern and have finished the first one. Turned out perfect and so easy. I am going to string 5 together and on the middle 3 use a tapestry needle and white yarn...for 1-M, 2-O, 3-M and tie it to the front basket of her walker. She will love it and with it being so easy to make I can have it done and get over there before noon. Thank you so much for sharing this pattern and allowing a forgetful person the time to make it start to finish. I would love to post a pic of it when I finish, but no option.

I Love these very much! I wish to decorate for my toddler with them, but I am having a hard time getting started... Round 1 says Ch4, "Make all of the next stitches in the first chain. 3..."
Is that in the fist stitch from the hook or the first stitch of the chain?

I think you should change the way you post on Raverly, bad karma to make it seem like your pattern so that people will click to your site, I love your site but you should just put suzies pattern in your finished projects so that people will see your finished project on her pattern listing on raverly if people like your finished project they can save to favs and you can invite people to your site in YOUR comments - But that just me

I love your heart garland. I made one up today. But before I finished my garland I used the heart pattern to make a dish scrubby out of strips of nylon tulle. I made two hearts and crocheted them together with single crochets all the way around. I stuffed it a bit with leftover tulle. I have a picture of it on my blog.

  76. Monday, February 2nd, 2009
I made a couple of these in the last few days and today made a little tiny heart version of this by using a magic circle and crocheting inside it. Make the magic circle then inside of it chain 4, 2 triple crochet, 3 double crochet, chain 1, 1 triple crochet, chain 1, 3 double crochet, 2 triple crochet, chain 3, and slip stitch to center of circle. Pull magic circle tight and tie off. I used it on a little baby bonnet. I'll be posting pics tomorrow on my blog. http://saltforthespirit.blogspot.com.
    Thanks for the inspiration!

  98. Wednesday, January 28th, 2009
I will have to give this one a try! Your hearts are gorgeous!! I think I am addicted to your projects... lol!

I wonder how this will look on my banister?! hmm...
  99. Wednesday, January 28th, 2009
That's a wonderful garland! I've got to try this sometime. :D

Dina, you could probably find a knitted heart pattern online somewhere (try checking here: http://knittingpatterncentral.com/directory/hearts.php). A chain is just pulling one loop through another, like knitting one stitch over and over again. And you could attach the chain to the hearts by knitting them together.
  100. Wednesday, January 28th, 2009
I think it's FABULOUS! I'll be linking and I hope I get time to give it a shot! I love the way it looks over the window!
  101. Wednesday, January 28th, 2009
This is just darling. Your time into it is so special.

I love this but my tennis elbow doesn't let me crochet. Do you sell these?
  105. Wednesday, January 28th, 2009
Too cute!! I wanna try it!!
  106. Wednesday, January 28th, 2009
The hearts go very quickly once you make a couple. I think you could make enough for a garland (6 or so) in an hour, then it doesn't take long to attach them to a chain.

I am so sorry but I don't know how to make a knitted one. Maybe someone else will!
  107. Wednesday, January 28th, 2009
This is so cute! I have to tell you I love your site. I sing that little tune Skip To My Lou every time I come across your page. You have so many neat ideas and I love it! I have put your button on my blog! Thanks! Dina :)

  109. Wednesday, January 28th, 2009
So pretty! How long does it take to do the whole thing? (An estimation of course.) :)

Thanks for this idea!! Home with the kids today on a snow day. Great project for me to crochet and hang out with them.
So far my first one turned out wonderfully. Going to make a bunch in Valentine colors.
