Make a DIY Crochet Sponge For a Useful Handmade Gift!

Posted by  ·  December 1, 2014  ·  Last Updated: May 28, 2016

I love giving useful handmade gifts! These little DIY crochet sponge whips up in no time and will add a bit of color to your friends kitchen! It has been popular to give crochet dishcloths so I think this is the perfect twist for something new for the kitchen.  I especially love this granny square dish cloth pattern.  This crochet bath scrubbie would be another fun item to crochet.

Stitch up a few crochet sponges and add an amazing soap or counter top spray for an extra special gift.

Once you have stitched up the perfect handmade gift, wrap it up extra cute.  I found these darling red berry baskets and embellishments at Michaels. So many clever things. I folded the doily over the side of the berry basket and secured with tape from a tape roller. Then I added a 3 dimensional sticker to the front.

I found your pattern while searching for new projects. I'm new to crocheting and this was a great pattern for using triple crochet (and killing time during the blizzard!). I added scrubby yarn to the textured side for a little extra cleaning power. I'm very happy with the results, this will be my new go-to for dishes. Thanks for sharing!

was just starting making the wonderful crochet sponges!! I just observed on the front side we have to start with 12 chains, then second row (starting to 2nd stitch from hook) single stitch and we're meant to finish with 11 or 12? What would be the correct?

It's actually the same question as grandma L asked.
Thank you and thanks for the pattern!!

on row one..front and back are done the same
Front- Row 1 (right side rows): Sc in 2nd ch from hook, & in ea ch across: 12 sc.
Back -Row 1 (right side rows): Sc in 2nd ch from hook, & in ea ch across: 11 sc.
if sc in 2nd chain fr hook I think the 11 sc is correct, so should we indeed start w/ 12 chains and end up w/11 or start with 13 chains and end up with 12. Wasn't sure if pattern on front side depends on havinf 12 sc at end of row 1 thanks

I found your link & pattern from Pinterest and I can't wait to make it! my question is what do you mean by 'right side only'? I just want to make sure before I attempt to make it. Thank you!

I think the "tr" means triple crochet?

you may have already found your answer but here it is... tr is
Here is how to crochet treble crochet stitches: yarn over 2 times, insert hook into stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop, (yarn over, pull up 2 loops) 3 times

Hi! This looks like a great and easy pattern. Is there anything between the two layers?

Claudia, there is nothing between the layers. It just gets thick.
