best sugar cookie frosting

I use this simple sugar cookie icing recipe all year round for any special event that I want to take sugar cookies to. This frosting for sugar cookies is great to spread on nice and thick with a knife on easy sugar cookies. or if you like cut out cookies this is the best sugar cookie recipe. So soft and buttery!

Sugar Cookie Frosting

You will find this sugar cookie frosting has way more flavor than a cookie glaze with corn syrup. Some might call this sugar cookie icing.  While this frosting will crust so you can stack the cookies it remains soft and delicious, unlike royal icing that gets hard. This sugar cookie frosting is more like a yummy buttercream frosting. You will not be disappointed!

    Hi Cindy...as for the milk in this recipe...whole milk, fat free...does it matter?

    I had never heard of this Cream Bouquet...very excited to try this!!

      I don't typically have whole milk, so I use whatever I have. I alway think though that the higher fat content makes it richer. Don't worry you are going to love this sugar cookie icing no matter what milk you use!

    I want to try your frosting recipe but Christmas is only about a week away and I don't have time to get creme bouquet via ordering! I found this recipe to make it homemade and am going to try it:

    Homemade Crème Bouquet:
    1 tsp. almond extract
    1 tsp. vanilla extract
    1 tsp. butter extract
    1 Tbsp. lemon extract

    Store in a small squeeze bottle.

      Hi Martha, actually for piping like on the Christmas trees, I like it stiffer so it holds it shape.

    Hello,
    I love the things you post. What is a bouquet? Is this the frosting you would recommend using on sugar cookies? I am only asking to know if you use other homemade frosting or if you like this one the best. I am trying to find a good one and something other the the canned frosting. Thanks!

    • Cindy
      Saturday, November 19th, 2016
      Leslee, I use what I have on hand. If I use un-salted butter it might need a pinch or two of salt. Typically, un-salted butter is fresher. Salt can oten be added to butter to help preserve it. Unsalted butter also lets you decide the amount of salt in a recipes.

    2 lbs. of powdered sugar is 32 oz... there is 8 oz in 1 cup .... 32 divided by 8 equals 4... so there is 4 cups of powered sugar in the frosting...
  33. Kathy
    Friday, November 13th, 2015
    Powered Sugar

    4 cups per pound so

    4C + 1#

    8C = 2#

    12C = 3#

    These are Approx measurements-----I just buy a 2# bag

    This sounds like a great recipe for decorated cookies. Just be sure and let the cookies set for approximately 30-45 minutes after decorating for the icing to harden enough to stack or store.

    I always make the Wilton Snow White Buttercream Frosting. That recipe calls for 12 cups/3 pounds of powdered sugar. It also uses a meringue base,along with almond, vanilla and butter flavors.

    You can also use LorAnn Princess Bakery Emulsion instead of Creme Bouquet. They're very similar. For those questioning the 2 lbs. of confectioners sugar, that is why this buttercream crusts. You need that much sugar and cornstarch to butter ratio for crusting.

    Does this icing harden enough to stack the cookies?

    Thank you,

      Yes Kathy. Let it set out uncovered until it crusts then you can stack. I do put wax paper between each layer.

    I use to have a cookie icing that was applied soft, after drying it would become just a hint of stiff, not so delicate. Then once you bit into the cookie it is soft like buttercreamm. Is this icing do that. I love the recipe and can't wait to make it. I will be getting creme bouquet. How much do you usually add for a standard recipe and can you add it to any flavor icing. Thank you.

    Creme Bouquet is a flavour enhancer.
    It has tones of vanilla, citrus, almond, and butter, and is quite strong, so use only the amount listed in the recipe.
    You can purchase it at cake supply stores or Amazon, or go to Wilton.com and get a home recipe on the discussion boards.
