How To Make a Rectangular Granny Square Stitch: Step-By-Step

First, gather these materials:

  • Crochet hook: Use our crochet hook guide to find the right size or mm hook
  • Worsted Weight Yarn: Medium weight yarn works best. Use your favorite color or try a new color!
  • Scissors: For cutting the yarn when you’re done
  • Darning needle: To weave in the ends

Steps

Foundation Chain

In this guide, we’ll start in the center and work outwards.

Make a foundation chain to be the center of our granny square. Start with a chain in multiples of 3+2.

Use a longer starting chain for larger granny squares.

Create a foundation chain of a multiple of 3+2.

Step 1: Center Piece

Now that you have your foundation chain, follow these steps:

  1. Work a double crochet in the third chain from the hook
  2. Double crochet all the way to the end, then turn your work over
Step 1 – Finished center of the Granny Square.
Work in double crochets all the way along

Step 2: Treble Clusters

Chain 3, then work 2 treble crochets into the first stitch to form the first treble cluster.

Step 2.1 – Chain 3, then work 2 treble crochets.
Chain 3, then work 2 treble crochets.

Now we’ll start adding the “Granny Clusters”, which are made from 3 treble crochets:

  1. Miss 2 stitches, then make 3 treble crochets in the next stitch.
  2. Keep doing this until the last stitch.
Step 2.2 – Miss two stitches, then make 3 treble crochets and repeat.

Step 3: Close the Round

To close the round, follow these steps:

  1. Make 3 treble crochets in the space right at the start of the foundation chain
  2. Chain 2, then make 3 more treble crochets in the same space. Repeat this once more to complete the round
Step 3 – Close the round.

Step 4: Complete the Other Side

Repeat the process from step 1:

  1. Skip 2 stitches, then make 3 treble crochets in the next stitch
  2. Repeat until the row is finished, and close the next corner like in step 3 right at the end of the foundation row

Make sure your treble clusters line up with the ones on the other side of the foundation chain.

Step 4.1 – Make more treble clusters.
Make more treble clusters as in step 1, then close the second round

You should end up with 5 treble clusters on each long side and 1 treble cluster on each short side, forming a rectangle shape.

Step 4.2 – The finished Rectangle Granny Square.

Now, if you like, you can keep making your Granny Square bigger.

Just turn over and repeat the process. Start at the corner space, with a new color.

This time, you’ll need 6 treble clusters along each long side and 2 treble clusters along each short side.
