This Dawn and vinegar homemade bath and shower cleaner is fantastic. The recipe has been floating around the web, so I had to give it a try for myself!
I couldn’t be more thrilled to have found an inexpensive, powerful homemade bathroom cleaner. Once again, vinegar proves to be a great household cleaner and you can even mix vinegar with baking soda for a great way to unclog a drain.

Homemade Bath and Shower Cleaner Recipe
You probably have the ingredients already at your house.
- Dawn Dishwashing Liquid
- White Vinegar
- Spray bottle with tight fitting lid
- Measuring Cups
Homemade Shower Cleaner Instructions
No need to use bleach, just equal parts Dawn Dish Soap and vinegar does the trick!
- Measure out equal parts of Original Blue Dawn dishwashing detergent and white vinegar.
- Heat vinegar for a couple of minutes in the microwave or on a cooktop until the vinegar is hot.
- Carefully pour vinegar into a spray bottle.
- Add in Dawn dishwashing detergent and shake to mix.
Ways to Use This Homemade Cleaner
This Dawn & vinegar cleaner will cut through soap scum, clean sinks, glass shower doors, and also the toilet bowl. Just spritz it on, scrub, and rinse. For tough soap scum build-up, spray the mixture on and allow it to sit for about 30 minutes. Scrub and rinse.
Do be careful, it does make a lot of bubbles, so the tub might be slippery. If there are too many bubbles, adjust the ratio by mixing two parts vinegar to one part Dawn. Salt will also dissolve the bubbles.
There’s More
Don’t stop with a clean shower, grab your kitchen sponge and wipe down any grease or grime you see on your cooktop, counters, and appliances!
You will be amazed by this bottle of blue magic!

Why do you heat the vinegar? Just curious as I was thinking about making more to just have it on hand. Thank you.
I made this shower cleaner today with Palmolive and not Dawn and it worked really really well! Maybe better than the batch I made with Dawn last time.
This is what use except I put it in one of those kitchen scrub brushes. All I have to do is get the sponge part wet and squeeze.
If adding Oils to cleaner, doesnโt it get greasy?
Itโll just smear.
Will it work on grout between kitchen floor stone? Will it work on the stove ? Not the burners- the actual stove? Thanks.
Love to make homemade bath soap
I’d like to add essential oils to the vinegar / Dawn cleaner. I think the addition of detergent will help to disperse the scent. Just not too much.
This works so well it cuts the grease too and leaves the surfaces clean and shiny!
Tried all sorts will try this thanks
Mary, I LOVE LOVE Thieves Household Cleaner from Young Living. That and some baking soda makes a great shower cleaner. If you have questions just email me.
What can you sub for Dawn? It has tons of petrochemicals and other chemicals, so I wonโt use it. Need a good shower cleaner, but not with Dawn.
We are adults, why use the word potty? I find it annoying
I tried this on my shower and it did an amazing job!! I will never buy store bought cleaner for my shower again!!
I use either Planet or Seventh Generation free Dish Detergent because they are SO much safer than Dawn. Dawn may clean oils off the animals that are in the commercials but its still not safe. Planet & Seventh Generation free are safer. Only the free is safer. There are many other safer brands, that is just what I can find myself. I don’t heat anything, its not needed and I use only at most 1/4 the dish soap and the rest vinegar. 1/2 is way too much but I have a softener, though even before the softener 1/2 was way too much. I store it in a recycled spray bottle that was previously cleaned out.
Hi Sally, I haven’t tried that. I use this mixture only in our showers when doing a deep clean. I am a HUGE fan of Young Living Thieves Cleaner. It is amazing. We use it for windows, counters, bathrooms…. really everything. If you want to learn more visit https://www.skiptomylou.org/young-living-essential-oils/
