When Is Teacher Appreciation Week 2027?

Teacher Appreciation Week 2027 runs from Monday, May 3, through Friday, May 7. National Teacher Appreciation Day falls on Tuesday, May 4, 2027. The first full week of May is designated every year by the National PTA and the NEA as the official week to honor teachers.

Quick Tip: Check with your school or PTO to confirm their specific celebration dates — some schools do their own week at a slightly different time!

How to Plan Teacher Appreciation Week

There are really two different people reading this section. The first is a PTO president or school volunteer who is planning something for the entire staff all week long. The second is a room mom or parent who wants to do something special for their child’s individual teacher. Both of you are in the right place!

For Schools and PTOs — Celebrating the Whole Staff

Many schools plan a treat or surprise in the teacher’s lounge every day during appreciation week. The easiest way to pull this off is to pick one theme and carry it through the whole week, or simply choose a fun saying for each day and match it with a treat. Here are both options.

Option 1 — Pick a Full Week Theme

A theme gives everyone a direction and makes the week feel like a real celebration from start to finish. Pick whichever one fits your school’s personality and run with it!

  • Around the World — Feature a different country’s cuisine each day with clever puns. Mexican Monday for nacho average teachers, pasta-tively awesome for Italy day. Display “Thank you!” in different languages on the bulletin boards all week.
  • Super Hero — Teaching is a superpower! Decorate the lounge with action bubbles filled with student messages. Serve hero sandwiches one day and soup for souper teachers another.
  • Garden Party — Encourage every student to bring a flower to their teacher. You plant the seeds of knowledge and Thanks for helping us grow are perfect sayings for the whole week. Pair with this free Thank You for Helping Me Grow printable.
  • Spa Week — Hire a chair massage service to come to the lounge. Offer fresh fruits, veggies, and flavored waters all week. Send teachers home on Friday with a packaged face mask and a tag that says we cannot mask our appreciation for you.
  • NACHO Average Teachers — Build the whole week around a nacho bar. Easy to pull off and teachers absolutely love it! Grab this free Gracias Banner printable to make the lounge festive.
  • Out of This World — Decorate with stars and planets. Serve rocket fuel drinks like coffee and sodas one day and hand out Pop Rocks, moon pies, and Milky Way candy bars on others. The message all week is we are over the moon about you!
  • Hooray for Hollywood — Roll out the red carpet and give teachers the star treatment. Serve popcorn and movie snacks in the lounge and hand out Academy Awards for outstanding teaching.
  • Grand Slam — Give students blank pennant shapes to write personal notes on and hang them in the hallways and lounge. Serve ballpark favorites like hot dogs, popcorn, and cotton candy each day.
  • Our Teachers Raise the Bar — Host a different bar in the lounge each day. A potato bar, nacho bar, salad bar, dessert bar. And of course give every teacher a candy bar because they are the best teacher bar none.
  • We Are Wild About You — Animal crackers, monkey bread, banana bread, and bananas all week long. Simple, fun, and teachers love the silliness of it.

Option 2 — Daily Sayings Without a Theme

Not every school does a full theme and that is perfectly fine. These fun sayings work great on their own. Just pair each one with the matching treat and you are done!

  • We donut know what we would do without you. Coffee and donuts in the lounge.
  • Thanks for making our kids such smart cookies. Fresh baked cookies make everyone smile.
  • We could not have picked better teachers. Fresh fruit or flowers work beautifully here.
  • Thanks for quenching the thirst for knowledge. A drink station, lemonade bar, or flavored waters are always a hit.
  • There is muffin like a great teacher. Muffins and juice are a crowd pleaser every time.
  • You are all that and a bag of chips. Small individual snack bags in a basket make teachers laugh every single time.
  • Any way you slice it our teachers are the best. Fill the lounge with pizza or mini pies with these cute pie stickers or these pie labels.

For Room Moms and Parents Celebrating Your Child’s Teacher

If you are in charge of celebrating one special teacher, this simple daily plan makes the whole week easy and meaningful without a lot of stress. Each day only takes about 10 to 15 minutes of prep!

  • Monday — Morning Pick Me Up Start the week with coffee, flowers, or both on the teacher’s desk. Attach a tag that says “A cup of gratitude for your hard work” or grab a free If Teachers Were Flowers printable tag to go with a small bouquet.
  • Tuesday — Teacher’s Favorite Things Tuesday is Teacher Appreciation Day, the big day of the week! This is the perfect time for a gift card in a free printable holder. If you have filled out a Teacher Favorite Things Questionnaire early in the year you will know exactly what to bring. Attach a tag that says YOU are one of my favorite things!
  • Wednesday — Handwritten Notes This is the day that teachers treasure most. Have your child write a note telling their teacher three specific things they love about them. You can use a free printable thank you card or just a piece of paper from the heart. If you are a room mom, consider asking the teacher for a few minutes of class time for all the students to write notes together.
  • Thursday — So Sweet to Be Taught by You Bring cookies or cupcakes and attach a tag that says Thank you for making us smart cookies or You take the cake! Grab these free printable tags right here: Smart Cookies tag and You Take the Cake tag.
  • Friday — Surprise Gift End the week with something the teacher will truly remember. Choose one or mix and match:

A memory book where every student contributes a drawing or short message is something teachers keep for their entire career. Organize a class photo for the cover and have a local copy shop bind it.

A classroom wish list basket filled with supplies the teacher actually needs is always deeply appreciated.

A short video tribute with clips from each student saying one thing they love about their teacher is easy to make on a phone and genuinely moves teachers to tears.

A gift card presented in a free printable gift card holder is always welcome and never goes to waste.

A few tips that make a big difference:

Send home a Teacher Favorite Things Questionnaire at the start of the school year so you know exactly what your teacher loves before appreciation week rolls around.

Instead of hoping parents bring items on their own, collect a small donation from each family and do the shopping yourself. It is so much more reliable and less stressful for everyone.

Delegate! Ask one parent to handle treats, one to collect notes, one to organize the Friday gift. You do not have to do it all yourself.

Remind students each day what is happening so they feel included and excited. When kids are enthusiastic the teacher feels it even more.

Ideas for the Whole Staff and Teacher’s Lounge

Teachers are amazing but they are not the only ones who deserve a thank you during Teacher Appreciation Week. The school secretary, the janitor, the librarian, the aides, the cafeteria workers and the administrators all make a difference in your child’s school every single day. These teacher appreciation week ideas work beautifully for the whole school family!

Here is what I did for Teacher Appreciation Week

I am a huge fan of vinyl banners that can be used year after year. They are typically reasonable in cost or are something that can be donated from a local sign shop. Here is a sample of what we did during the week:

Teachers were served coffee and donuts in the teacher lounge. One year we hired a donut truck to come to the parking lot.

Small bouquets were purchased from a local flower wholesaler. We sat them in buckets in front of this banner to make sure they know we could not have hand-picked better teachers and staff.

A local bakery made the teachers cupcakes to show our teachers they take the cake.

If you would like to make your own 2ft by 4ft banner, you will find the graphics for the first two banners are included in my teacher appreciation bundle.

A Note From Me

Teachers are close to my heart in a way that goes deeper than most people know. I have a degree in education myself, so I have always had a special place in my heart for teachers. But more than that, I am a mom who had a child with special needs, and I was constantly overwhelmed with gratitude for everything the teachers did to help my child. The IEPs after hours. The phone calls and support when I needed it most. The patience and creativity they poured into helping my kid thrive.

The hard work of an entire teaching staff is not lost on me.

My kids are grown now, and I volunteer at a school. What I see both breaks my heart and fills it at the same time. We have placed more and more responsibilities on our teachers. So many tasks that have nothing to do with teaching. And we ask them to do it all for a salary that does not come close to reflecting their worth.

These are people who choose, every single day, to love and shape our future. We owe them our deepest thanks.

Whether you spend five minutes printing a tag or an afternoon making something by hand, please take a moment this week to say thank you. Your teacher will feel it more than you know.

  6. I bought large canvas totes and when I was in helping in the classroom and the teacher was going to be doing assessments in another classroom for an hour or so, I helped each child apply pain to their hand and then put their handprints on the bag. I then wrote their names by their print with permanent fabric marker, and then on the card put the line “you have touched our hearts and we’ll carry you with us forever”.

  7. These are great ideas! Here is another idea that I actually received from a friend of mine. She made a batch of rice crispie treats and then cut one large heart out of it and wrapped in colored saran wrap and then traced and cut her daughter’s hand out of construction paper attached it to the wrapped treat and wrote “You have touched my heart. Thank you for being my teacher.” This could also work well with heart shaped sugar cookies.
