Sugar Scrub Recipe
Mix oil sugar and essential oil and put it into a little jar. It is as easy as that to make your very own DIY sugar scrub recipe. Some people get fancy and add olive oil and or almond oil. I think this simple recipe is amazing!
Peppermint Sugar Scrub Recipe
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup coconut oil
- 1 to 1 1/4 cup sugar
- 15-20 drops Young Living Peppermint Essential Oil
- jar
- printable peppermint sugar scrub labels
Instructions
- Measure coconut oil when solid. Melt coconut oil and allow to cool. Stir in 1 cup sugar and 15 drops peppermint essential oil. Put the sugar scrub mixture into jars. Place label on top of jar.
During the winter I like to use 1/2 cup coconut oil to 1 cup sugar. My skin is a bit dryer and I love the extra moisturizer. In the summer when my home is warmer and the coconut oil might not always stay solid I use 1/2 cup coconut oil to 1 1/4 cup sugar. I always use at least 15 drops of the essential oils because I really want to take advantage of the aromatherapy benefits!
NOTE:
- During the winter months, I have been using fractionated coconut oil. This is coconut oil that stays liquid. It makes it super easy to scoop out of the jar and use when my house is cooler. I think the perfect mix is 1/4 cup melted coconut oil, 1/4 cup fractionated coconut oil, 1 cup sugar, and 30 drops essential oils.
- Here are the labels and recipe for Lavender sugar scrub.
If giving as gifts place the sugar scrub into small mason jars. Small canning jars work great!
Download the free sugar scrub labels and print on any color of cardstock. You can choose red labels or black labels.
Using a 2 1/4 inch circle punch (affiliate link) cut out the labels. Glue the label to the top of the lid. The labels can also be printed on one-up (a solid sheet) of label paper and then cut to make stickers.
How cute is that! What a useful gift that your friends will enjoy!

What is a Sugar Scrub Good For?
A sugar scrub is the best way to exfoliate rough skin on your feet and elbows. It’s also gentle enough to use on your face. The result is glowing, clean skin.
The coconut oil is a rich moisturizer to condition and repair skin. And a few drops of peppermint essential oil will invigorate your senses and open pores.
The grainy texture of the sugar is just enough to remove dead skin cells and prevent ingrown hairs. Sugar is also a natural humectant, which means it brings in moisture.
How many times a week should you use a sugar scrub?
Sugar scrubs are best used two or three times a week. This can keep your skin looking fresh without irritating it with too much exfoliating.
Sugar scrubs work best when you apply them in a gentle, circular motion. Don’t rub them hard in a back and forth motion! Just apply gently and let the sugar grains do the work.
If you notice any irritation or dryness – and this is really true for any soap or moisturizing product – you should cut back how often you use it. Once a week might be enough for your own skin. Everybody’s skin sensitivity is different.
How much does a homemade sugar scrub cost?
If you look online, you’ll see a lot of fancy sugar scrubs that can easily cost upwards of $15. Some are little more than lemon sugar scrubs or scrubs using brown sugar, and some are high quality.
But you can make your own sugar scrubs at home for way less than that! A jar of homemade sugar scrub costs only couple of dollars to make.
Plus, you know exactly what’s in it. No artificial scents, dyes, or chemicals are needed.
How long does DIY sugar scrub last?
A DIY sugar scrub will last several months. There are a few ways to make sure it lasts a long time:
Store your sugar scrub in a dry place. The jars are pretty, but keeping it out the open in your bathroom can expose it to a lot of moisture.
Pick a jar with a good, tight-fitting lid. Keep the lid tight between uses.
Try to avoid getting water into your scrub when you’re using it. That will keep the mixture fresher longer.

Hi! How many oz does this yield?? I’m filling 4oz jars and need to know how much sugar etc I need for 18 4oz jars. Thank you!!
Kristina the circle are 2 1/4 so that should work perfect.
Gosh Molly, I don’t know how to answer. I use a scoop for my legs, then another for my arms and then a little bit for my face.
What amount should I give as directions for use, to put on a gift tag?
thanks
I would love some of these recipes in my email cuz i seem to forget the recipes to soon
Do you use the same amount of coconut oil if using liquid?
My jars are 2 25 lid size? Do you happen to have the labels in that size. Just asking. No worries if you don’t. I love this idea. Thanks!
Hi Jenni, not a silly question at all…. but it is hard to answer since jar sizes are different. I used small jars and it filled two. It all will depend on the size you choose.
Tricia, yes you can use the liquid… it will keep it from getting solid in the winter months.
Carla, no you didn’t do anything wrong. The coconut oil with set up, espeically during the winter when our homes our cooler. When first hop in the shower I hold the jar in my hands a minute… it is enough to soften around the edges and I scoop it out. If you want it to stay more liquid use fractionated coconut oil. This type of coconut oil will stay liquid.
Either way I think you will love how super silky this sugar scrub recipe makes your skin feel. I have even been using it on my face. I think I am going to add Frankincense and Copaiba along with the lavender for my next batch for extra benefit to my skin. I will let you know.
I made a single batch to try and I’m wondering if I’m using the wrong kind of coconut oil. Later in the day I went to try the scrub it was solid. How do you get it to stay soft? I used the winter ratio sugar to oil. What did I do wrong? I was hoping to make gifts for my co-workers.
Thank you for sharing this recipe and the labels. Can’t wait to try it.
Can you use liquid coconut oil or does it have to start off solid?
You will need to make these
This is probably a silly question- but is this the recipe for one jar of scrub?
