An easy method to bake potatoes in your slow cooker.
Prep Time 10 minutes
Cook Time 8 hours

Equipment

  • slow cooker

Ingredients

  • 4 - 6 russet baking potatoes I have done 8
  • 2 - 3 teaspoons olive oil optional 1/2 teaspoon per potato (I typically omit oil and salt)
  • 1 - 11/2 teaspoons salt about 1/4 teaspoon per potato(optional)
  • Aluminum foil
  • Your choice of toppings: Grated cheese, cooked broccoli, crumbled bacon, chives, chili, sour cream etc.

Instructions

  • Scrub the potatoes and dry completely.
  • Prick each potato several times with a fork.
  • Rub potatoes with a tiny bit of oil and then rub with salt. This step can be omitted.
  • Wrap each potato tightly in aluminum foil. Be sure potato is completely covered.
  • Place potatoes in slow cooker
  • Cook the potatoes on high for 4 to 5 hours or low for 8 to 10 hours, or until soft. Do not overcook or potatoes will become soggy. I cook mine about 8 hours.
  • Carefully unwrap the potatoes.
  • Cut potatoes open and top with desired toppings.

Slow Cooker Baked Potatoes

Now that you’ve got a pile of perfectly baked potatoes, let’s eat!

Load them up with your favorite toppings, serve with a big salad and dinner is served. Potatoes also go great with grilled meat, corn on the cob, and all kinds of other summer sides.

What are your favorite baked potato toppings? We like to make ours “loaded” by laying out a bunch of toppings. We have butter, sour cream, salt and pepper, cheddar cheese, bacon bits and green chives or onions handy.

In fact, a potato bar is a perfect set-up for a party. Just lay out all your toppings and let guests grab their potatoes and top them off with all the fixins!

Tips for Perfect Crock Pot Baked Potatoes

  • After you wash your potatoes, make sure you dry them completely.
  • Rub each potato with olive oil and rub with salt, if desired.
  • Pierce the potatoes in several places with a fork. Technically, you are steaming the potatoes, and that steam needs somewhere to get out!
  • Wrap the foil tightly around each potato. You don’t want it loose or open.
  • If the potato is exposed, it can discolor. Darkened potato is still totally edible, though!
  • Don’t overcook, or the potatoes will get soggy. You want fluffy!
  • For a healthy topping, try plain nonfat Greek yogurt instead of sour cream. It adds protein and still delivers the tangy, creamy flavor you want.
  • You can also smoother one of these delicious baked potatoes with Slow Cooker Chili. I think of this as comfort food add some cheese and sour cream on top – YUM!

  1. Dorothy I heard this happens if you cook on low? Always cook on high for 8 hours.

  2. Ann, always cook on high. That’s the trick I do believe:) Do you spray the bottom of your crockpot with cooking spray before putting your wrapped potatoes in it? I read where several people did that & I wonder if that’s similar to your ring of foil on the bottom? You think? Just curious?

  3. Yes always cook on high. That’s the trick. Do you spray the bottom of your crockpot with cooking spray before putting your wrapped potatoes in it? I read where several people did that & I wonder if that’s similar to your ring of foil on the bottom? You think? Just curious😊

  4. Always wrap them in foil or you’ll be disappointed. Also cook on high for 8 hours.

  5. Jeanie do you put more than one in the microwave at a time? If you can cook more than one, could I cook 4-5 at a time, I’ve got a big microwave. Not sure how many will fit I just wanna know if I can cook more than one at a time? Thanks😉

  6. Brenda, No do not poke holes in the potatoes first. They’re not supposed to have holes if they’re cooked in the crock pot. Also cook them on high always.

  7. No do not poke the potatoes they’re not supposed to have holes cooked in the crock pot. Also cook them on high always.

  8. Cheryl, cindylouh said way up the comment list that she cooks on high 8 hours & it’s her recipe you’re following incorrectly. Someone tested it for everyone up the list too. Someone cooked on low they were terrible, then cooked on high & they were wonderful so it’s even been tested. Cook the potatoes on high whether it’s 2 or 10, russet potatoes or sweet potatoes. All should be cooked on high ok?

  9. Christine she did give suggestions to why they failed. I read the same fail over & over but they all said cooked on low in their crockpot. Cindylouh said cook them on high way up the list but nobody would take the time to read anything she commented, they kept posting the exact same problem. It never failed they cooked on low. I saw Cindylouh say many times “no water” answering that question constantly then she answered about wrapping them in foil telling people yes they need to be wrapped, when they complained about cooking on low 8 hrs & the potatoes being terrible she said she always cooks on high that may be the problem. Then someone tested her theory posting low & high cooking & it was solved, if they’re cooked on low it ruins them so you must cook on high. Would you believe after all that someone cooked on low & asked what was wrong? They didn’t read any comments or suggestions. Now if you look you’ll see how hard she tried to help but how many times can she answer the same question without thinking something else is wrong when people just won’t read? It happened so much she missed the part where someone cooked on low, “AGAIN, I couldn’t believe it actually. I understand it looks like she’s not tried but she did answer at first. The repetitive same question I guess there’s not much point in answering if nobody will read? That’s what’s happening. I usually never comment but this frustrated me & seeing someones criticism towards how Cindylouh responds to questions cooking simple baked potatoes in a crockpot kinda bothered me. Why is it that complicated, what if she has other recipes on here? Sarcasm & criticism would stop anyone from sharing recipes. I don’t see how she does it if she gets all this grief over a baked potato? Wow… Cook them on high people! Wrap them in foil, don’t add water, spray the bottom of ur crockpot if ur worried it’ll crack, turn on high with clean, dried, wrapped in foil potatoes, cook on high with the lid on for 8 hours & enjoy😉👌

  10. @cindylouh @patchwork15
Cindylouh, I also remember you saying you always cook them on high & they’re great? Patchwork15 commented cooking them on low & can’t figure out the problem? They never attempted high. I remember you said you always cook them on high Cindylouh. Makes sense, potatoes always are baked or cooked at the highest temp. Whether it’s oven, microwave, especially the crockpot! Nothing cooks right on low in a crockpot, it stays warm all day never actually cooks properly.
I’m gonna try these so I read all the comments esp about the problems due to simply low or high settings because a problem always occured after soneone said low. It was obvious. Always use high like Cindylouh does, that’s what I’m doing but wish me luck?
