Pour into a bottle. We used a recycled pickle relish bottle. A glass bottle works well too, especially since it will be heated in the microwave.

Notes:

  • You can substitute butter for the coconut oil, however the coconut oil gives the more ‘real’ Magic Shell flavor.
  • You can use milk chocolate chips, but everyone we served preferred the semi-sweet chocolate chips.
  • This homemade magic shell is great to keep on hand for a last minute dessert for unexpected guests.

  1. They may have deleted the Pin on Pintrest, but they can’t stop me from bookmarking this amazing recipe!!

  2. Ah-ha! Using a different picture for the pin worked. At least so far. I pinned the picture of the various ingredients a couple hours ago and it’s still up at the moment. 🙂

  3. My pin got deleted, too! 🙁 I guess I have to go all old school and bookmark, now… *sigh* My family LOVES this recipe!

Just a thought – maybe take out the “Magic Shell” reference in the original post, and figure out a creative way to rename it without referencing the trademarked product… Yours is far superior, BTW… No unpronounceables!!! Thanks for this recipe, and I’m sorry you’ve had to deal with big, bad, corporate meanies. 🙁

  4. You can use 2 different types of coconut oil. Refined or Unrefined. Unrefined (better in my opinion) is going to taste like coconut. Refined, will not taste like coconut.

I tried this a few times on ‘banana ice cream’ and it is AMAZING!

  5. Yes, my pin was deleted, too, and I pinned from this site? Is the first picture not pinnable?

  6. I guess I could understand why they had a fit… maybe you could edit the blog post and call it something else? Like “chocolate sauce that hardens when you add it to your ice cream” LOL… do you think they would catch on? LOL! Whatever – so I can’t pin it, so what? It now has a home in my bookmarks! 😀 Keep up the great work!

  7. I got the same email from Pinterest. A workaround is to Pin the post and remove the words “Magic Shell” from the text box. I tried this and I’m hoping it sticks!

  8. I wonder if you were to rename this without using any reference to “Magic Shell”, we might be able to pin it again. Perhaps “Hard Chocolate Shell”? Just a thought. I came searching as to why the pin was removed. Glad you had the info at the top of your blog!

  9. Pinterest deleted my pin, too. I reverted back to what I used to do pre-Pinterest. I highlighted what I wanted to save, did a “control-C” to copy and then pasted in MS Word and saved the document to my recipe folder. I’m just glad the recipe is still here for now. 🙂

  10. Since it’s not you that had a problem with this, I just re-pinned it with the title “Make-at-home quick-hardening chocolate coating (since apparently the owners of the Brand Name objected to the use of it to describe this 😉 )”

  11. Ok, so that pin was also deleted. It is Copywright infringement I guess using the Magic Shell name in the pin. So now I will re-pin it without the name! Wish me luck.

  12. I’m thinking that Magic Shell had it pulled because its just that close to theirs and they want us to buy their expensive version. I printed it out and screen shot from my phone so I’ll have it for later. Keep up the great posts, thank you!

  13. They deleted mine too…..It’s probably because the “Magic Shell” name is copyrighted and that name is included in the post. It wouldn’t have been a problem if “chocolate ice cream shell topper” or something of the sort was used.

  14. Please do NOT put the previous comment on your web site!!! I am having a problem (which I thought was straightened out but apparently isn’t) with Google/gmail publishing my full name and photo when I make comments, even though I changed my privacy settings to only show my name as Meli”. Sorry, but this is very important that it not be posted.
