This 5 Minute Spicy Marinara Sauce is quick easy and delicious! The best part is it starts with canned tomatoes so you can make it anytime! Don’t overlook how helpful and convenient canned food can be for easy and healthy meals. Don’t assume fresh is always better. According to a University of California, Davis study, many canned fruits and vegetables have equal, or more nutrients than their fresh or frozen counterparts. For a yummy recipe full of canned veggies and chicken try my Chicken Pot Pie recipe. It is a quick and easy meal that is a crowd pleaser.
5 Minute Spicy Marinara Sauce
1/4 cup olive oil
1/2 teaspoons crushed red pepper flakes
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
3 cloves of garlic, pressed
1/4 teaspoon dried oregano
1/2 teaspoon dried basil
1-28-ounce can crushed red tomatoes
zest of one small lemon
In a cold saucepan, combine olive oil, garlic, red pepper flakes, oregano and basil.
Bring mixture to a simmer and cook about 1 minute until everything is fragrant. Don’t let the garlic brown. Add in tomatoes, simmer for 5 minutes and then remove from heat. Now for the trick from 101 Cookbooks, stir in lemon zest. I think this is the ingredient that makes the sauce slightly tangy and taste so bold and fresh! Yum!
Pour this spicy marinara over pasta or grilled vegetables. It makes a great sauce for pizza and calzones…… and also amazing spicy meatball subs! So many delicious meals from a can of tomatoes!
