Lowe’s challenged me this month to refresh my kitchen. Well my kitchen is older, so there was plenty we could do to freshen it up.

First up the cabinets. The finish had turned cloudy on most of the doors and was wearing off in places. The cabinets were showing 40 plus years of wear. The cabinet handles were also dated.

Since new cabinets are not in our budget we did two budget friendly fixes —paint and new hardware. We gave the cabinets a couple coats of dark gray paint. This is a process, but totally doable with patience. We used a paint sprayer to get a really smooth professional finish and sanded between layers. Sleek new handles finished the cabinets off!

New hardware is a great way to update your kitchen

Our tile was also showing its age and I have been eyeing those glass tiles so we decided to replace our tile backsplash. Lowe’s has a great photo tutorial that we followed. How to tile a kitchen backsplash

So here is our freshened up kitchen.

  1. Amazing transformation! After seeing this earlier today I just took my husband to Lowe’s tonight and convinced him we need to do our backsplash like this. He put it on our list for a winter project. It really looks modern and sleek. We found the black, white and grey that will look great in our kitchen diner. http://www.obseussed.com/2011/05/home-diner-reading-spot.html Thanks for sharing this and the tutorial link at Lowe’s (we’ll be coming back to it when we do the project).

  2. Did you replace the hinges too on the cabinets? And did you paint the door ON the cabinet or did you remove them to pain them?

  3. This looks so amazing!!!! You did such a great job transforming the space! Thanks for the inspiration!

  4. Oh I love this combo! The grey, and sleek hardware plus the backsplash is amazing. Love it 🙂

  5. I had no idea you were doing all this. I love the grey and I really want to add a tile backsplash. You have me inspired to make it happen.

  6. Oooh, I LOVE it!! I had so wanted to do the mosaic glass tiles, but we needed more functional things like the new lighting more.
    It looks fabulous!!!

  7. GREAT CHANGE-UP! Thought about painting the countertops with something like Gianni Countertops? I think the makeover would benefit from a full fresh look of counter update too. Good choice of the glass mosiac tile.
You should feel proud of your accomplishment. It rocks.
