Lowe’s challenged me this month to refresh my kitchen. Well my kitchen is older, so there was plenty we could do to freshen it up.

First up the cabinets. The finish had turned cloudy on most of the doors and was wearing off in places. The cabinets were showing 40 plus years of wear. The cabinet handles were also dated.

Since new cabinets are not in our budget we did two budget friendly fixes —paint and new hardware. We gave the cabinets a couple coats of dark gray paint. This is a process, but totally doable with patience. We used a paint sprayer to get a really smooth professional finish and sanded between layers. Sleek new handles finished the cabinets off!

New hardware is a great way to update your kitchen

Our tile was also showing its age and I have been eyeing those glass tiles so we decided to replace our tile backsplash. Lowe’s has a great photo tutorial that we followed. How to tile a kitchen backsplash

So here is our freshened up kitchen.

  1. Did you use regualr wall paint on the cabinets or is there special cabinet paint? and can these be apinted with a brush instead of a sprayer? i do not have a sprayer and can not afford one aldo i live in a rental house I only have 2 full cabinets and half cabinet so this would be very inexpensive for me thank you for sharing your cupboards look awesome!!

  2. I love the dramatic change it made! Don’t you just love walking in your kitchen and seeing all that pretty?!
We redid our kitchen on a budget this spring and I still get giddy walking in the room. 🙂

  3. Your kitchen looks great! I would love a tile back splash in my kitchen, but I don’t know if I would dare do it myself. I will have to check out the tutorial to see if I could. Thanks for sharing.

  4. What kind of paint did you use? I am just starting to get the bathroom cabinets ready for a facelift.

  5. Great job Cindy! I love that you re-used your kitchen cabinets in your kitchen make-over. Many people would have spent all the money in their budget just to have new cabinets and put the rest off until they got more money. It great when we can recycle items that still get the job done. Its a great lesson for our children to learn that not everything has to be brand-new, all the time.

  6. Cindy!! I love it. The grey cabinets are awesome!!!! So nice. Love!!

  8. Love the updates–beautifully done! I’d love to hand out in your kitchen now.
What really made me post a comment was the great laugh I got from the post being sponsored by Lowe’s followed immediately by a Home Depot ad in my reader. Just can’t get away from advertising.

  9. Hey there, question for you (as i am currently looking to do a similar process)what did this budget friendly redo cost you? It looks fantastic btw! 😀
