My Kitchen

Posted by  ·  August 31, 2012  ·  Last Updated: August 31, 2012

Lowe’s challenged me this month to refresh my kitchen. Well my kitchen is older, so there was plenty we could do to freshen it up.

First up the cabinets. The finish had turned cloudy on most of the doors and was wearing off in places. The cabinets were showing 40 plus years of wear. The cabinet handles were also dated.

Since new cabinets are not in our budget we did two budget friendly fixes —paint and new hardware. We gave the cabinets a couple coats of dark gray paint. This is a process, but totally doable with patience. We used a paint sprayer to get a really smooth professional finish and sanded between layers. Sleek new handles finished the cabinets off!

New hardware is a great way to update your kitchen

Our tile was also showing its age and I have been eyeing those glass tiles so we decided to replace our tile backsplash. Lowe’s has a great photo tutorial that we followed. How to tile a kitchen backsplash

So here is our freshened up kitchen.

Does your kitchen need a refresh?

Its such as you learn my mind! You seem to grasp so much about
this, like you wrote the ebook in it or something.
I feel that you simply can do with a few percent to
drive the message house a little bit, however
other than that, this is magnificent blog.

A great read. I will certainly be back.

Amazing transformation! After seeing this earlier today I just took my husband to Lowe's tonight and convinced him we need to do our backsplash like this. He put it on our list for a winter project. It really looks modern and sleek. We found the black, white and grey that will look great in our kitchen diner. http://www.obseussed.com/2011/05/home-diner-reading-spot.html Thanks for sharing this and the tutorial link at Lowe's (we'll be coming back to it when we do the project).

Did you replace the hinges too on the cabinets? And did you paint the door ON the cabinet or did you remove them to pain them?

      Hi Tanya,
We painted the hinges, and they seem to be holding up really well.

Great job! And doesn't it feel great every time you walk in the room?!
  25. Friday, August 31st, 2012
GREAT CHANGE-UP! Thought about painting the countertops with something like Gianni Countertops? I think the makeover would benefit from a full fresh look of counter update too. Good choice of the glass mosiac tile.
You should feel proud of your accomplishment. It rocks.

Did you use regualr wall paint on the cabinets or is there special cabinet paint? and can these be apinted with a brush instead of a sprayer? i do not have a sprayer and can not afford one aldo i live in a rental house I only have 2 full cabinets and half cabinet so this would be very inexpensive for me thank you for sharing your cupboards look awesome!!

Your kitchen looks great! I would love a tile back splash in my kitchen, but I don't know if I would dare do it myself. I will have to check out the tutorial to see if I could. Thanks for sharing.

What kind of paint did you use? I am just starting to get the bathroom cabinets ready for a facelift.
  32. Friday, August 31st, 2012
Did you paint your cabinets gray or a dark chocolate brown?
  33. Friday, August 31st, 2012
So chic! The Skip to my Lou fam now gets a sleek new kitchen-- work it!
  34. Friday, August 31st, 2012
Great job Cindy! I love that you re-used your kitchen cabinets in your kitchen make-over. Many people would have spent all the money in their budget just to have new cabinets and put the rest off until they got more money. It great when we can recycle items that still get the job done. Its a great lesson for our children to learn that not everything has to be brand-new, all the time.
  35. Friday, August 31st, 2012
Cindy!! I love it. The grey cabinets are awesome!!!! So nice. Love!!

Thanks Cindy! I have been wanting to do something in my kitchen, but alas no money. This has encouraged me to just do a little and it can help alot!
  38. Friday, August 31st, 2012
Love the updates--beautifully done! I'd love to hand out in your kitchen now.
What really made me post a comment was the great laugh I got from the post being sponsored by Lowe's followed immediately by a Home Depot ad in my reader. Just can't get away from advertising.
