Pour into a bottle. We used a recycled pickle relish bottle. A glass bottle works well too, especially since it will be heated in the microwave.

Notes:

  • You can substitute butter for the coconut oil, however the coconut oil gives the more ‘real’ Magic Shell flavor.
  • You can use milk chocolate chips, but everyone we served preferred the semi-sweet chocolate chips.
  • This homemade magic shell is great to keep on hand for a last minute dessert for unexpected guests.

  1. So bummed someone pinned this without permission then it had to be removed! Hopefully Ill remember the recipe since I cant refer back to it now. My boy will love it when he’s a little older!

  2. A little ridiculous that you’re removing images from pinterest. pinterest is how i found your blog and your removal and overprotection for copyright will make me never return! Will just look for recipe somewhere else!

  3. I love this recipe, but I have a weird question. I pinned this on my recipe board on pinterest (a long while back) using the “Share this Post” link you have at the bottom of your website, but I received an email from them this morning saying that you had requested that the pin be removed, stating, “While many copyright owners are happy to have their content Pinned on Pinterest, we recognize that some do not want their content to appear on Pinterest.” O_o So are we allowed to post your stuff to Pinterest or not? D: I thought we could because of the tag you have at the bottom. Just thought I’d inquire about it since I frequently visit your blog and save things to my boards for later use. Thanks! (:

  4. This recipe is 2340 calories and 199 grams of fat. Don’t know how much it makes so can’t calculate a 1 tablespoon serving size. Use sparingly.

  5. Thanks for sharing your recipe! I just tried it and it’s amazing! I used semi-sweet chocolate chips and organic virgin coconut oil from Vitacost. I stored the leftovers in a glass jar in the fridge. 🙂

  6. Thanks for this! It’s easy and impressive, just the way I like ’em! I used a Hershey bar and some bittersweet baking chocolate in lieu of the chocolate chips, but it turned out GREAT and tasted delightful over coffee ice cream. I’m definitely bookmarking this.

  7. We added peanut butter to the mix too. We’ve used this for dipping bananas too. Run a popsicle stick through the end of a banana, put the chocolate in a tall glass (like a beer glass), dip the banana so that it is entirely covered, roll in crushed pretzels or sprinkles, or nuts or nothing at all and freeze on a tray covered with waxed paper. After frozen, remove from tray and put in a ziplock bag.

  8. Using the best ingredients will make the best chocolate shell. We haven’t found any coconut oil better than Nutiva brand. If you want to buy it online, iherb dot com is where we go for unusual health food ingredients (use code COT477 to save 5 bucks).
Now, I’m going to take a try at making this chocolate topping! Thanks!

  9. JayLeigh –

This won’t be dairy free unless you use dairy free chips, which are hard to find. Even semi-sweet chips contain milk.

  10. In reply to Jodi’s concerns about liquid coconut oil. Coconut oil solidifies below 76 degrees F, so you will not have a problem on ice cream.

  11. Made this with Dove dark chocolate, so amazing! Thanks much for this recipe. We have had it almost every night (after the kiddos go to bed) until we ran out of ice cream. 🙂 Delish.
