How to Make a Diaper for a Child’s Doll

  1. Cut two pieces of fabric.  I used a soft flannel, in pink of course (in my daughter’s eyes there are no other colors). Place the pattern piece on the fold of the fabric.

These cloth diapers would be so cute made from a fun print. You could also choose to use a printed cotton for the outside and a plain flannel for the inside of the diaper. baby-doll-diaper.jpg
  2. Stitch the two pieces right sides together.  Leave about a 2-inch opening on the straight edge along the back for turning. nappy pattern for doll pinned together to stitch
  3. Clip corners and curves.
  4. Turn the fabric right side out.
  5. Whip stitch opening closed.
  6. Sew the velcro on the inside of the back flaps and on the outside of the front. I am confusing you with the picture. Pretend it is flipped over.

NOTE: Actually, this is easy, just lay your diaper out and fold it up and you will see where the velcro goes.  It is probably a good idea to try it on your doll to get the correct velcro placement.doll diaper with velcro placement

These only take minutes, including the time it takes to re-thread the sewing machine needle when the thread breaks sewing the velcro on (does anyone have any tips for this)? My daughter aka “little mommy” will be in heaven with this gift!

Okay, this might seem like the craziest gift, but I tell you my little girl is going to adore a stack of these baby doll diapers. Really a diaper is the only ‘clothes’ our babies wear if any. I think I might cut some pieces of fabric so she can have diapers and wipes.

  1. I put a velcro strip all the way across the fron of the diaper that way it will fit even the smaller dolls and stuffed animals.

  2. I’ve just made 2 of these for baby Annabell as I am fed up of my daughter using her her own nappies and then throwing them away! I had to alter the pattern slightly, Annabell has a larger bottom than the pattern allowed for. I also cut out a duck and a teddy bear from felt to put on the front of each one. Thanks for the pattern and the idea, they were an instant hit and soooooo easy to make.

  3. Instead of sewing the velcro, I buy stick on velcro dots, very durable, washable and oh so quick and easy.

  4. This is a great idea! We have some like that at home. We actually cloth diaper the real kids, too, and as for a suggestion about the velcro…why not try snaps! You can use one of those hand-held snap presses from the fabric store and add some metal snaps. Or, you can add resin snaps – these kind are on cloth diapers. The resin snaps are much cheaper and super good quality but might be a little hard for little fingers to unsnap. We prefer snaps on our cloth diapers over the velcro. 🙂

  5. Thank you! I have had this bookmarked for awhile now, since I knew my mother was buying a Bitty Baby for my daughter’s birthday. Now she has a couple of diapers that are a lot nicer than the one the doll came with. Thanks again!

  6. I put a copy of the diaper pattern in my craft file so I will always have it.
With 4 granddaughters ages 6 and under, I’m going to make a stack for each of their houses and mine! Thank you for the super-quick pattern.

  7. Thanks! I am going to make some to use for a baby shower game for my oldest daughter’s first baby. She is having a girl so I will definitely be using the pattern again when she gets old enough to play with dolls!

  10. Thank you, thank you, thank you! My 2 year old daughter and 4 year old son have been wasting my daughter’s size 4 diapers to put them on her baby dolls. I’m going to make some of these this weekend for her! 🙂

  11. Thanks for the pattern. I thought I was done buying diapers, and then my mom bought my daughter a Baby Alive…

PS- to sew through Velcro without breaking your needle use a heavy duty needle. They may also be labeled Denim/Corduroy.

  12. Just what I was looking for. I agree that it is simple, but made worlds easier with your handy template. Thank you so much!

  13. These are great, I going to make some for a friend for her 2nd birthday! A suggestion for the velcro though(I noticed you were looking for ideas to get around the tread breaking) use the gel type super glue instead of sewing them on! There nothing wrong with cheating when it comes to sewing!
