Celebrate Kansas Day with some Sunflower Cupcakes.

sunflower-cupcakes.jpg

Roll frosted cupcakes in a chocolaty cereal (leave a little space around the edge of the cupcake for the petals), pipe on some petals with a star tip and then very carefully decorate a red M&M to look like a lady bug. To make clean-up easier I attach my decorating tip to the corner of a ziploc bag. For the ladybug I cut the tiniest tip off the corner of the bag. I used a little melted chocolate almond bark for the ladybug details, but frosting would work also. Cupcakes adapted from Ladies Home Journal.

You can see last years celebration cake here along with links to Kansas coloring pages.

  1. Wow! I love these cupcakes. We are having a ladybug theme for my daughter’s first birthday party. I would love to try making these! Would you mind sharing what type of frosting you used for the petals? Thanks!!

  2. Hi….I am directed here from Whip-up…..where your paper marbling tutorial is posted. I am an art teacher who used the same idea for years until the Vano liquid starch formula was changed. The addition of borax made the starch unusable…..it just did not work any more. Could you tell me what brand your use? Thank you.

  3. You are amazing. That ladybug makes me smile, and when I think that you made it out of an M&M, it cracks me up. So great.

  4. Those are beautiful and give me ideas for Maryland’s birthday as we have the black-eyed Susan as a flower….yummy!

  5. Those sunflower cupcakes are phenomenal. Even without the extra decorative touches they take the CAKE! Did you use almond bark because it gets harder or because it is easier to work with? Just wondering.

  6. i had to make sugar cookies for griffin yesterday because today in class they decorated them like sunflowers.

of course, griffin’s teacher decided to give him one with wheat to decorate anyway. ::banging head on table::

  7. Those are so adorable! (my state’s birthday is Valentine’s day, so sadly, we don’t get any cute state related (a beaver? a douglasfir? a salmon?) cupcakes! waaa
