If you are looking for a quick way to celebrate Groundhog Day on February 2nd make a cute little groundhog puppet. I have made it super easy by sharing a free printable groundhog puppet for you to use.
If you love to sew you might like this brown felt groundhog finger puppet and even if you don’t there is also a no-sew method. Either puppet makes a fun interactive Groundhog Day craft.
Keeping kids busy in the wintertime can be a task, that is why I love to create and share crafts for kids. This groundhog printable craft is not only fun but also teaches them about Groundhog Day.
What is Groundhog Day?
Groundhog Day has been celebrated for over 200 years dating back to 1887. It is believed to have been started by a German community called Punxsutawney Pennsylvania. We celebrate every year when people gather in Punxsutawney to watch a groundhog predict the weather for the next six weeks.
On February 2nd expect to see two men pull Punxsutawney Phil from his burrow. If Phil sees his shadow then expect six more weeks of winter. If there is no shadow, expect an early Spring!

Free Printable Groundhog
Use these cute little guys to make a groundhog that pops in and out of a cup! Preschoolers, kindergarten kids, and even older kids will love this easy peasy fun craft!
How to make a hiding Groundhog Puppet
First, download and print the groundhogs on white cardstock. Cut out and color the groundhog body. Add googly eyes if you like.
Punch a hole in the bottom of the foam cup with the wooden skewer and set the cup aside.
Tape the wooden skewer to the back of the printable groundhog.
Cut the green paper to fit around the outside of the cup. Below is the basic shape I used. Click the link above the photo to use my template. Make sure to test it first because foam cups will slightly vary in size.
Wrap the foam cup with the green paper and secure it with the glue stick. Make slits in the green paper around the top of the cup to make it look like grass.
Poke the wooden skewer through the bottom hole on the inside of the cup. Just like that, you have a pop-up groundhog.
Now you see him….
Now you don’t! How cute is that!?!
