I am excited to be offering 30 days of fun crafts to keep kids active and entertained this summer! You won’t want to miss a day of these fun crafts for kids from some amazing bloggers! Please be sure to pay them a visit!
I love doing crafts with my boys over the summer, and this one is great (and cheap) because it only uses scrap pieces of yarn that you may already have laying around. I like the way this twisted yarn looks like a complicated braid–you won’t believe how easy it is to achieve. In fact, my 8-year-old actually taught me this technique, so you know it will be perfect (and easy) for your little ones to try!
1. First, choose three colors of yarn. I especially like using yarns of different weight or thickness.
2. Cut the yarns to the same length. A general rule of thumb is to start with yarn three times as long as you want your finished necklace or bracelet to be. Remember, once it’s done you can always go shorter, but you can’t go longer!
3. Get a friend and each of you take an end of the yarn trio. Back up until the yarn is taut.
4. Now start twisting, each of you in the opposite direction of the other (one twists to their right, the other to their left).
Keep twisting!
Your yarn should look like this when you’ve twisted enough.
5. Keeping hold of the ends, start walking toward each other. The yarn will start to twist around itself. Let it twist all the way up.
Tie off the loose end then tie around your neck or arm.
If it’s too long, tie a knot at the place you want it to end, then cut above that knot.
I doubled my necklace for a two-strand bracelet.
Have fun experimenting with different yarn types, colors, and thicknesses. You can even try more than three colors!
It is sooooooooo amazing that it is so easy and beautiful! It’s a perfect gift.
