Making your own ornaments is such fun, especially a Crochet Snowman!

I’ve been getting in the festive spirit and have had a rather splendid time working on this super easy, yet mega cute crocheted snowman.

These snowmen look great as stand-alone ornaments, or you could add a little loop to hang them from your Christmas tree.

Crochet Snowman Supplies You Will Need

  • White, red, brown, and black yarn. I’ve used mercerized cotton (dk weight),  along with a 3mm crochet hook.
  • Orange embroidery floss, along with a 1mm crochet hook.
  • polyester toy stuffing.
  • Decorative eyes. I used glass eyes, alternatively, safety or googly eyes would work just as well.
  • Decorative diamond embellishments (optional)
  • Red ribbon (approximately 5mm in width)
  • Darning needle
  • Scissors
  • Glue.

Stitch Abbreviations for this Festive Snowman Ornament

  • ch = Chain
  • ss = Slip Stitch
  • sc = Single Crochet (UK Double Crochet)
  • hdc = Half Double Crochet (UK Half Treble Crochet

Let’s Begin With the Arms

  1. (make 2) Using 3mm crochet hook and the brown yarn.
  2. With a slip knot on your hook, Ch 8, sl st into 2nd ch from hook, sl st into next chain.
  3. Ch 3, sl st into 2nd ch from hook, and into all remaining chains.

Next The Body of the Snowman

  1. Using White yarn. The body of the Snowman is worked in a continuous round. Use a marker to mark the beginning of each round.
  2. Round 1: 8 sc into magic loop (8 sc)
  3. Round 2: 2 sc into each stitch (16 sc)
  4. Round 3: sc into each stitch (16 sc)
  5. Round 4: *2 sc into the first stitch, sc into next stitch* repeat 7 more times (24 sc)
  6. Rounds 5 – 9: sc into each stitch (24 sc)
  7. Round 10: *sc 2 tog, sc into next stitch* repeat 7 more times (16 sc)
  8. Round 11: sc into each stitch (16 sc)
  9. Round 12: *sc 2 tog* repeat 7 more times (8 sc)
  10. Fasten off leaving a long tail.
  11. Before you stuff and close up the body of the Snowman, attach the two arms on either side (use the picture for reference).
  12. Thread a darning needle with the tails of the arms and sew it into the body, hiding the ends on the inside.
  13. Stuff the body with toy stuffing. Use a pen or blunt object to help stuff the filling through the tiny opening.
  14. Thread a darning needle with the tail of the body and weave all 8 stitches together. Pull tight for a snug closure. Sew in ends.

Now the Head of the Snowman Ornament

  1. Using white yarn. The head of the Snowman is worked in a continuous round. Use a marker to mark the beginning of each round.
  2. Round 1: 8 sc into magic loop (8 sc)
  3. Round 2: 2 sc into each stitch (16 sc)
  4. Round 3 – 6: sc into each stitch (16 sc)
  5. Round 7: *sc 2 tog* repeat 7 more times (8 sc)
  6. Fasten off leaving a long tail.
  7. Stuff the head with toy stuffing. Use a pen or blunt object to help stuff the filling through the tiny opening.
  8. Thread a darning needle with the tail of the head and weave all 8 stitches together. Pull tight for a snug closure.
  9. Use the remaining tail end, to sew the head to the body of the Snowman.

Making The Scarf

  1. Using Red yarn.Round 1: ch 25, sc into 2nd ch from hook, sc into each stitch till end. (24 sc) Fasten off.
  2. Attach short strands of yarn and secure them with a knot, to create tassels on both ends of the scarf. Trim tassels to the same length.

Making The Top Hat

  1. Using Black yarn. Round 1: 6 sc into magic loop, sl st into first sc. (6 sc)
  2. Round 2: ch 1 (does not count as sc), 2 sc into each stitch around, sl st into first sc. (12 sc)
  3. Round 3: Working into the back loops, 1 sc into each stitch around, sl st into first sc. (12 sc)
  4. Round 4-8: sc into each stitch around, sl st into first sc. (12 sc)
  5. Round 9: Working into the front loops, *2 sc into first st, sc into next st* repeat 5 more times, sl st into first sc. (18 sc)
  6. Fasten off leaving a tail long enough to sew the hat onto the head of the Snowman.

Add the cute Orange Nose for the Snowman

  • Ch 4, sl st into 2nd ch from hook, sc into next stitch, hdc into next stitch. Fasten off leaving a tail to sew into the head.
  • Use the tail not only to attach the nose but also to fashion the nose to the desired shape.

Embellishments and Finishing Touches for the Crochet Snowman

Of course, your snowman isn’t complete yet! He needs some eyes, some jeweled buttons, and a nice shiny ribbon for his hat!

For the eyes, you can either embroider them, use glass safety eyes in the smallest size you can find (like in the picture), or even some beads.
Use a colorful ribbon to wrap around his top hat, and attach it with a small blob of crafting glue.
For the buttons on his body, I went a bit more extravagant and gave him 2 glitzy Swarovski stones. Alternatively, you can use tiny buttons, or reach for your embroidery floss!
