Welcome to the Vintage Made Modern Blog Tour! Today we are going to give away a copy of the book Vintage Notions: An Inspirational Guide to Needlework, Cooking, Sewing, Fashion & Fun. My friend Amy Barickman founder of Indygo Junction has designed a wonderful new fabric collection, Vintage Made Modern Centennial Celebration which was inspired by the art in Vintage Notions.
In 2010 Amy published her book Vintage Notions, which was the culmination of a personal journey that started twenty years ago when she began collecting rare sewing and needle arts books, vintage home arts magazines, and cookbooks. When Amy came across the work of Mary Brooks Picken, a pioneer in the domestic arts and international authority on dressmaking and fashion, she found her muse. Mary’s calling, which was to educate women, encourage their entrepreneurial spirit, and elevate the value of their work, and did so through the Woman’s Institute of Domestic Arts and Sciences which was a correspondence school for women to learn about entrepreneurship, dressmaking and other home arts.
As 100th anniversary of the founding of the Woman’s Institute approaches in 2016 Amy found herself wanting to commemorate it, and what better way to do that then with a fabric line! The Vintage Made Modern line features artwork from Vintage Notions as well as other Mary Brooks Picken sewing publications. She chose what she felt was the most timeless designs that would work for both fashion, home and accessory projects.
For instance, this classic plaid print really pops on Indygo Junction’s Sidekick Skirt pattern.
This Dressmaker print would be totally at home in a sewing or craft room. This Banded Basket can keep your supplies organized while keeping your room cute. This project was made combining Vintage Made Modern with Amy’s other fabric line, Crossroads Denim. See more Indygo Junction patterns here and get 20% when using the code VMM15 at checkout!
Today, Amy will be sharing with us a pattern for a accessory bag, which she made from the Vintage Made Modern line. This simple-to-sew bag can be used to protect your favorite shoes, purse or even jewelry when you whether you are jet-setting or on a stay-cation. This practical project is also pretty to use. The ric rac trim along the top adds a decorative element and the simple cord closure, makes it easy to use.
Materials for Accessory Bag
13″ x 34″ piece of fabric for bag
1 yard of ribbon or cording for pull ties
1 yard of large ric rac
How to make an Accessory Bag
1. With right sides together, fold fabric in half, short ends together. Press. Stitch the sides in place using a 1/2″ seam allowance. Press seams open.
2. Turn the top down 1/4″ to the inside. Press. Turn down again 3/4″ and press.
3. Unfold what you just pressed. Measure down 1″ from the top at one side seam on the right side of the fabric. Mark. Measure 1/2″ to each side of this and place a mark. Make a 1/2″ long buttonhole at each of these two marks.
4. Refold the top of the bag to the inside on the previously pressed lines. Stitch close to the bottom of this folded piece to make a casing for the pull ties.
5. Pin the rick rac to the inside of the top of the bag. Topstitch in place.
6. Use a safety pin to help pull the ties through the casing. Tie each end in a knot.

My favorite was a 1940’s dress I made about 10 years ago. It was fun to make and wear.

I like the banded basket, but the accessory bag would also be so handy when traveling.
