I am happy to tell you about a new book called Ghosts by Raina Telgemeier the author and illustrator of the graphic novels Smile, Drama, and Sisters, all #1 New York Times bestsellers. She also adapted and illustrated four graphic novel versions of Ann M. Martin’s Baby-sitters Club series (One of my daughter’s favorite series).
We thought chocolate covered strawberry ghosts would be the perfect snack while we read!
Ghosts tells the story of Catrina and her family and their move to the coast of Northern California because her little sister, Maya, is sick. Cat isn’t happy about leaving her friends for Bahía de la Luna, but Maya has cystic fibrosis and will benefit from the cool, salty air that blows in from the sea. As the girls explore their new home, a neighbor lets them in on a secret: There are ghosts in Bahía de la Luna. Maya is determined to meet one, but Cat wants nothing to do with them. As the time of year when ghosts reunite with their loved ones approaches, Cat must figure out how to put aside her fears for her sister’s sake — and her own.
The author, Raina Telgemeier, has masterfully created a moving and insightful story about the power of family and friendship, and how it gives us the courage to do what we never thought possible.
Strawberry Ghosts Supplies
- white candy coating
- royal icing eyes
How to make strawberry ghosts
Wash and dry strawberries. They must be completely dry. Remove stems. I love this little strawberry huller. It can be found at most kitchen stores. It makes quick work of removing all the stems.
Slowly melt candy coating in the microwave. Place a long wooden skewer through the bottom of the strawberry to help dip the berries.
Take another skewer to help push the strawberry off the dipping skewer onto parchment paper. Before the candy coating dries add royal icing eyes.
