Shamrock Shake

Posted by  ·  March 5, 2018  ·  Last Updated: March 5, 2018

A Shamrock Shake is the perfect way to celebrate St Patrick’s Day. This mint flavored milkshake is a yummy treat! Smooth, creamy and oh so minty! Vanilla ice cream blended with mint flavoring, a few drops of green food coloring and topped with delicious whipped topping make this shake.  The little candy shamrocks make it extra festive!

How do you celebrate St Patrick’s Day? We make a few blarney stones, color up these St Patrick’s Day Coloring Pages, make a few crochet shamrocks rainbow cupcakes, green candy popcorn…. and do our fair share of St Patrick’s Day Crafts!

Each year for a limited time McDonald’s serves up their famous Shamrock Shake. With my yummy knockoff, you can now have this delicious shake anytime you like!

What is Shamrock Shake made out of?

The Shamrock  Shake was first introduced in 1970. Can you believe the shake first was made of lemon-lime flavored with vanilla ice cream, a lemon-lime sherbet, and vanilla syrup?  I don’t think I would have been a fan.  By 1973, the shake was merely a green colored vanilla shake, eliminating the sherbet.  Thankfully now it is now mint flavored vanilla ice cream. I love mint. If you do too you might like these mint recipes.

Green Candy Shamrocks

Green shamrocks are made by melting green candy coating and placing melted candy in a candy mold. Once hardened,  pop candies out and garnish your St. Patty’s Day treats. They are super easy to make and add a nice touch to cupcakes too!  I have a complete tutorial how I made candy stars. It will show just how to make candy toppers! They can be made for any holiday or occasion! All you need is a chocolate mold.

Thank you so much for posting this. I'm allergic to milk but following your directions I was able to use my fake milk and ice cream to make myself a shake. I've been missing out for all these years!!!

This will be on our menu! Sounds yummy and my mouth shouldn't be watering at ice cream this early in the morning. Changing the shamrocks to a Girl Scout Thin Mint cookie though. They are on hand and you can't beat cookies and ice cream. Who am I kidding? You can't beat anything and ice cream. Thanks for another wonderful idea.

Thank you! My husband is going to L-O-V-E me for making this. He's been flipping out because he looks forward to McD's Shamrock Shakes every year and apparently they are at select locations this year. Those select locations being nowhere near us.

That looks great! My kids tried one from Mc Donald's the other day and one of them said it made his tummy sick. Apparently there was too much mint extract. Homemade sounds great though!
