How to Make a Diaper for a Child’s Doll

  1. Cut two pieces of fabric.  I used a soft flannel, in pink of course (in my daughter’s eyes there are no other colors). Place the pattern piece on the fold of the fabric.

These cloth diapers would be so cute made from a fun print. You could also choose to use a printed cotton for the outside and a plain flannel for the inside of the diaper. baby-doll-diaper.jpg
  2. Stitch the two pieces right sides together.  Leave about a 2-inch opening on the straight edge along the back for turning. nappy pattern for doll pinned together to stitch
  3. Clip corners and curves.
  4. Turn the fabric right side out.
  5. Whip stitch opening closed.
  6. Sew the velcro on the inside of the back flaps and on the outside of the front. I am confusing you with the picture. Pretend it is flipped over.

NOTE: Actually, this is easy, just lay your diaper out and fold it up and you will see where the velcro goes.  It is probably a good idea to try it on your doll to get the correct velcro placement.doll diaper with velcro placement

These only take minutes, including the time it takes to re-thread the sewing machine needle when the thread breaks sewing the velcro on (does anyone have any tips for this)? My daughter aka “little mommy” will be in heaven with this gift!

Okay, this might seem like the craziest gift, but I tell you my little girl is going to adore a stack of these baby doll diapers. Really a diaper is the only ‘clothes’ our babies wear if any. I think I might cut some pieces of fabric so she can have diapers and wipes.

Our granddaughter was finially baptized last easter sunday[2013] at easter vigil and wore the traditional white infant style gown with matching bonnet, lace anklets and white shoes and under the gown she had the white rubberpants and tee shirt.we gave her a doll dressed in the baptism gown and bonnet and it came with tights so i took the tights off the dolland put the dool size lace socks and white shoes on it.I found a pair of white doll size rubberpants and tee shirt and put them on the doll as well.the granddaughter was thrilled to get the doll dressed in the same outfit as she wore!

  7. Our eight year old neice made her first communion last may and we gave her an 18 inch first communion doll that had the white tights with her dress.the neices parish requires the girls to wear a white cloth diaper and rubberpants under their tights so i made a cloth diaper out of regular diaper material and pinned it on the doll, then i found a pair of white new born size rubberpants and put it on the doll over the diaper then the tights over them.the rubberpants bunched up under the tights just like the neices rubberpants fit her.she was thrilled to get the doll!

  8. Thank you! My daughter got a Baby Alive & I refuse to pay for disposable diapers for a DOLL! (preemie size baby diapers do work & are cheaper for anyone who reads this) I was just going to make my own template but Googled & found your site. Not only will I save money & feel better about the environment but they’ll be cuter to boot! (my daughter already picked out purple flannel w/ butterflies)

I am adding about an inch to the top & bottom of your template to more closely match the diaper that came with the doll – my paper towel version seems to fit her well. I’ll also add a batting strip in the middle between the layers to make it more absorbent – paired with a pair of rubber pants (newborn size with the leg holes tacked in tighter), I think it’ll work.

Thanks again. I’ll be back, I’m sure.
