Today I mixed up a batch of cinnamon dough to make a Give Thanks garland.   To make the cinnamon dough, mix 1 bottle (4.25 ounces) of cinnamon with about 3/4 to 1 cup applesauce.  I rolled the dough out about 1/4 inch thick between sheets of plastic wrap. The plastic wrap really makes it easy!  I used 3 1/2 ” alphabet cookie cutters to cut out the letters and a straw to poke holes in the tops of each letter. Now I was in a hurry so  I placed the cut-outs in a very low oven (150 degrees) for about 1 hour on each side. I then strung the letters on a thin ribbon.

They really weren’t completely dry—–so I had a couple break when I hung the garland.  I simply hot glued them back onto the ribbon.  If I was going to do this again I might just forgo the holes and hot glue the letters to the ribbon. Either way I am sure it would work better if the letters were completely dry.  This garland does make my kitchen smell delicious!

  1. Ohhh I love this idea!! I think I will use it for Christmas though, as the cinnamon ornaments always remind me of that time of the year. Thanks for the idea!!

  2. Wonderful idea! I can see a few places to hang this in my home. Don’t know that I’ll get a Thanksgiving one done, but a Merry Christmas one would be doable.

  3. Ooh, we make that cinnamon dough all the time! Only, our recipe calls for, like, cups and cups of cinnamon. Ours never turn out nearly as beautifully as yours, either, perhaps on account of the two little girls who comprise two-thirds of my personal workforce!

  4. Oh I love this recipe. Definitely stick with the holes. Once the dough hardens completely, the holes will be just fine. These last for years. Some of mine are more than 10 years old and are still going strong and still smell wonderful!

I adore the new twist you put on this. Well done!

  5. I love this! I’ve got some Christmas tree ornaments that I made many years ago this way. It is such a treat to open up my box of ornaments and smell the wonderful apple cinnamon.
