Intercessory prayer is a powerful, heartfelt way to intercede on behalf of others by praying for their needs instead of your own. When my son was born on November 8, 1996, things didn’t go as expected. We were terrified to have a baby on a ventilator. While the doctors and nurses reassured us his lungs would be fine, a heart problem was noticed causing us so much worry when it was time to bring him home. At home with my active toddler and my sweet new baby, the days were long and scary. There were so many things that could go wrong. But, there was one thing that kept me going, and provided me great comfort and incredible hope. And that one thing was prayer.
I didnโt know how or why these prayers arrived. They were life-saving. What an incredible sense of peace and comfort they provided my family. I still have the prayers and you can see one from December 27, 1996.
My sweet baby is now 25 years old and completely healthy! He is an example of the power of prayer.
This incredible young man has such a big heart and works to make a difference in this world. He so easily shares love and compassion. He is a dreamer, an innovator and so wildly creative. Currently, he and a friend have invented a new way for people to give themselves a shot. They found a way to minimize the anxiety and pain of self-administered injections. As I watch him try to raise money for manufacturing I am constantly amazed by his grit and determination. He had to be a bit of a fighter from the startโฆ. But, thankfully he was surrounded with prayer. Oh, what a difference it made.
If I could only ever tell you one thing it would be to never underestimate the power you have to make a difference in someoneโs life.
I canโt express how meaningful, life-saving, and life-nourishing all the acts of kindness were we experienced when our baby was born.
- friends who brought meals to my parents and our toddler while we were at the hospital an hour away.
- friends who took a CPR class before we came home so they could watch our baby so we could go out.
- and so many SO MANY prayers, from close friends, church membersโฆโฆโฆโฆ. And strangers.
And it didn’t stop there… I still am the beneficiary of such goodness. The notes that come now to let me know that prayers are said for my other son who is ill. For meals that come when I am overwhelmed and exhausted. Simple texts letting me know I am thought of.
I think we often donโt do anything because we worry about what to do, will they like it, what should we say, etc. We psych ourselves out. But I urge you to know it doesnโt matter what you do, it is the act of recognizing someoneโs need that makes the difference.
We also often have the attitude that prayer is the last resort and a little thing we can do. Really though it is the MOST we can do for someone. My family is living proof.
First of all, then, I urge that entreaties and prayers, intercessions and thanksgivings, be made on behalf of all men. 1 Timothy 2:1
What is Intercessory Prayer?
Intercessory prayer is defined: praying for someone else and not yourself. Those who study and practice intercessory prayer are persistent and pray for long periods of time for those on their prayer and petition list.
Intercessory prayer requests: if you know someone who is sick and you pray for them, you are praying an intercessory prayer on their behalf. If someone is injured, suffering, troubled, in trouble, or asking for guidance and you pray for them, you are praying an intercessory prayer for them.
Therefore, confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another so that you may be healed. The effective prayer of a righteous man can accomplish much. James 5:16
