Holiday Bake Craft Sew and Crochet

First off I want to say Thank You to Cindy for inviting me to participate in the Bake Craft Sew and Crochet Along on her blog.  Today I am sharing an easy crochet cowl pattern that works up quickly in a worsted weight yarn.  I made mine in red and white sparkle yarn so I named it Candy Cane Ripple.  You can choose any two colors of yarn – team colors would also be great for this project.

Skill Level:  Easy – Advanced Beginner

Hook Size:  US J or 6mm

Yarn:  Hobby Lobby I Love This Yarn    2 different colors or 250 yds of 2 colors of worsted weight yarn #4

Measures:   approx. 55 in. around, 8 in. wide

To begin chain 234 (multiple of 18) with color 1

Foundation Row:  3 dc in 5th ch from hook, skip next 2 ch, 3 dc in next ch, skip next 2 ch, *[3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc] in next ch (top point), [skip next 2 ch, 3 dc in next ch] twice**, skip next 5 ch, (bottom point), [3 dc in next ch, skip next 2 ch] twice, rep from * across, ending last rep at **, 1 dc in last ch, turn.

Row 1:  Ch 4, [3 dc between next two 3-dc groups] twice, *[3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc] in next ch-3 space (top point), [3 dc between the next two 3-dc groups] twice**, skip space between the next two 3-dc groups] (bottom point), [3 dc between next two groups] twice, rep from * across, ending last rep at **, skip next 3 dc, 1 dc in top of turning ch, turn, draw color 2 through last loop, drop color 1.

Rep Row 1, working in the color sequence of 2 rows color 1, 2 rows color 2 carrying the yarn along the one edge – do not cut.  After you have completed a total of 6 stripes of color or 3 sets of each color you will then join the ends of the cowl together with a slip stitch to form a circle or tube or you can leave a long tail of yarn when you fasten off and sew the ends together with this end – be careful to keep the yarn that is carried on the edge enclosed in the seam so it doesn’t show on the right side.  The stitch pattern is reversible and looks the same on either side but you will have one side as a right side and one as a wrong side after sewing the ends together.  Note:  if you choose to crochet the ends together with a slip stitch the seam is a little bulkier – I sewed mine together.

Abbreviations:    approx – approximately        ch – chain       dc – double crochet           rep – repeat

This cowl is a lot of fun to crochet and the pattern is very simple to follow once you establish your foundation row.   The cowl can be worn long or doubled for warmth.   I hope you enjoy the pattern.
