Welcome to our second kids sewing project with Singer. Today Bella and I are making a bookmark. I do hope you are sewing along with us! This bookmark is a great project for boys and girls. The best part is that these bookmarks would make a useful and appreciated gift for a teacher. Stay tuned, Bella and I will be sharing a clever way to add a message to a teacher right on the bookmark!

So if you are encouraging a sewer and a reader, here is the perfect project!

How to sew a bookmark

Singer has made us a printable pattern.

SINGER & SkiptomyLou Kids Series – Bookmark Project 2

This is a great project to use up those fabric scraps. All you need is  two 3” X 18”  rectangles of print fabric and a  2 ½” X 8 ½”  rectangle of medium weight fusible interfacing. A fabric marketing tool and corner turner (or chop stick) will be helpful. We used a glittery fat quarter from Riley Blake.

Cut two 3” X 9”  rectangles of print fabric and a  2 ½” X 8 ½”  rectangle of medium weight fusible interfacing. It was easiest for Bella if I drew lines for her to cut on with a disappearing fabric marker.

Iron interfacing according to manufacturer instructions to the back of one of the fabric rectangles.

Place right sides together. Mark a two inch opening along one side that will NOT be sewn. This allows for turning the bookmark inside out.

Clip corners, being very careful to not clip any stitching.

Turn bookmark right side out. A chopstick can help get the corners.

Press bookmark, making sure opening is tucked evenly into the side. Stich along the outside edge of the bookmark being sure to sew the opening shut. We worked hard on stopping at corners, lowering needle into the fabric, raising presser foot, turning, and then lowering presser foot and begin sewing again.

Tadah! Finished! Read on sewers!

  1. Great tutorial. Easy for my daughter to use. She just made her 1st bookmark and it turned out so well, she’s going to make more for her penpals.

  2. This is really clever. I am planning on making a pile of them to sell at our guild boutique, and to use as stocking stuffers. Great idea and super tutorial. Thank you!

  3. Excellent site you have here but I was curious about
if you knew of any user discussion forums that cover the same topics
talked about in this article? I’d really love
to be a part of group where I can get opinions from other knowledgeable individuals that
share the same interest. If you have any recommendations, please let me know.
    Appreciate it!

  4. This piece off writing is actually a good one it helps new net people, who
are wishing in favor of blogging.

  5. And it is also important that God is the center of your relationship so that
it will last forever. Commitment: This is entirely essential in getting through a long distance relationship.
You just have to be open-minded and prepared
to whatever consequences you might face in the end.

  6. Ideal Details, kudos. When it comes to professionals who plan to shed fat rapidly, consider our website for the optimal method by which to lose weight in short order.

  7. Unquestionably believe that which you said. Your favorite justification seemed to be on the web
the simplest thing to be aware of. I say to you,
I definitely get annoyed while people consider worries that they
just do not know about. You managed to hit the nail upon the top and
also defined out the whole thing without having side effect ,
people could take a signal. Will probably be back to get more.

    Thanks

  8. Thanks for the cute project! We made two this afternoon, and planned for two more tomorrow. They will make lovely gifts for her grandmas, who will be so impressed with her sewing!

She had a hard time cutting them out – I ended up doing it for her. Maybe her scissor skills aren’t that good yet? She is 5. It could also be that she’s left-handed, and I don’t have any lefty shears, but they have to make them, right? I’m going to see if I can find some fabric cutting scissors that would work better for her. Thanks again! She can’t wait to move on to the tote bag. I told her she has to get really good at bookmarks first!

  9. What a great project for kids. I think mine will be making some for Christmas this year.

We’d love for you to share your posts at our Finished Friday blog party.

  10. We have a 2 week Spring Break…I now know one activity we can do :-)…I Love it.. Great Job Bella..

  11. That is beautiful, Bella! Great job of sewing! Your teacher is going to love this! You are learning “sew” much!
