Chalk Paint

Having fun in the sun with chalk paint.

chalkpaint1

So simple to make, just cornstarch, food coloring and water.

chalkpaint

Equal parts of cornstarch and water make the paint.

We placed 2 Tablespoons cornstarch into each cup of  an old muffin tin.

chalkpaint2

Next place 2 Tablespoons water into each one of the four muffin  cups.

chalkpaint3

We added 4 drops of food coloring for each color into the individual cups. (The back two have been mixed, the front two have not been mixed)

chalkpaint4

Paint away!

chalkpaint5

We used foam brushes for painting. They soaked up quite a bit of cornstarch and after about 30 minutes we rinsed them out and then continued painting.

chalkpaint6

Make Oobleck for another fun cornstarch activity.

Want to make sidewalk chalk? Try this egg shaped chalk.  If you don't want it egg shaped, pour the mixture into empty toilet paper rolls. Once the mixture is dry peel the paper roll away from the chalk.

How to make Gak (Slime)

We had a few days of rain around here so we made some slime to occupy our time inside. Just two ingredients and you will be able to really impress your kids!

gak1

To make simply mix equal parts of liquid starch and glue together.

We placed 1/4 cup liquid starch into a sandwich bag and added about 3 drops of green food coloring.

gak2

Next add in 1/4 cup glue

gak3

Mix well. It will start to form a solid blob. There might be a  bit of liquid that will not mix in, just remove the blob of slime and discard the bag with the extra liquid.

gak4

Take it out of the bag and have fun!

gak6

Looking for more ways to impress your kids? Try making oobleck!

Need a way to use up the rest of the starch? Try making some marbleized paper.

You will find other rainy day activities here.

Multi-purpose Ski Badge Reel

Recently our library changed to new  library cards that are similar in shape and size to shopper rewards cards.  Just like the shopper cards you receive a large card and also small card for your key ring.  Since my children don't have key rings and I didn't want to carry theirs on my key ring, I thought of an easy way to keep them handy.

When we go skiing we attach our lift tickets to our jackets with these badge reels. Our skip pass badge reels fit perfectly to our new library cards.

And it clips to the strap of our new library bag

And it easily extends the card to check out books and then retracts all while never leaving our library bag

I am hoping you have a few extra badge reels laying around your house or  they can be easily found at local sporting goods stores.  Most suppliers on the Internet require multiples of 100.  This makes them extremely cheap (less than a dollar each) but who needs that many.  If you know of a good supplier for these ski pass badge reels, please share in the comments.

Brazilian Caipirinha

While in Denver we had the complete pleasure of meeting Sergio Augusto and his family.

braziliandrinkssergioThey live next door to our dear friend Brooke with whom we stayed. They all  became such a special part of our lives. Each one in their own way made our time in Denver better ----by helping us with our children, hugs, smiles, friendship and at the end of a long day---  sharing good company, a Brazilian Caipirinha and some amazing music.

How to make a Brazilian Caipirinha

For each Brazilian Caipirinha Sergio style you need 1 lime.

braziliandrink1

Remove the center part of the lime to keep the drink from becoming bitter.

mosaicelime74baefde8c62276777b2b60c6a6a4aa50161484

Thinly slice the limes.

braziliandrink4

Place limes in a glass.

braziliandrink5

Add about 1 Tablespoon of sugar (you will have to adjust for your taste).

braziliandrink6

With a muddler mash the sugar and limes together. Work until you have started to disolve the sugar and have a good amount of juice.

brazilian7

Fill the entire glass with ice.

braziliandrink8

Fill the glass with Vodka. Traditional recipes call for a shot of alcohol but I have to say these have slightly shy of a  1/2 cup of vodka. To be authentic use Cachaca.

braziliandrink9

Stir.

brazilian10

Cheers!

braziliandrink11

Best enjoyed with good friends and this

I hope you all will take the time to visit Sergio's Webisite and learn more about this talented man!
