Stepping stones are a great way to add some useful character to your backyard. Let children join in the fun of making their own DIY stepping stones.

Grab a bag of concrete and some plastic pot saucers from your local Lowe’s. You will also need some rock, shells or mosaic tiles. We found our decorative mosaic tiles at Michaels. Mix the concrete according to package directions. We had to guess how much we needed for our three stepping stones (about 1/3 of an 80lb bag). We added water to the concrete until it looked like a really thick milk shake. Once mixed immediately pour into the plastic saucers.

Now for the fun part! Wait about five minutes and then press pieces of glass, tile, shells or rocks into the concrete. Water will start to settle on the top of the concrete. It may be blotted up with a paper towel if you like.

Kids will have fun making their own designs and will be so proud when they see their stepping stones right in their own yard.

Don’t miss the opportunity to preserve those sweet feet and hands!

When concrete is dry and hard remove the stepping stone from the plastic saucer. Allow stone to completely dry before using. Be sure to check package directions for curing time of the concrete.

Would you like to add some fun to your backyard?

Disclosure: Lowe’s provided me with a gift card for supplies.

  1. I love this! We’re planning a remembrance garden that has stones for major events so this is a great tutorial!

  2. I love making stepping stones with my girls! This year we are going to ramp it up a bit…we are going to try to make a concrete bench. I bought the molds online for about $75…now I just need to buy the concrete. If it works out well, I plan to do this project with my girl scout troops! 🙂

  3. Spent the day laying pavers from Lowe’s today. Will have to add the stepping stone idea too! Fingers crossed!

  4. We love Lowe’s. We redid my kitchen and got lots of what we needed at Lowe’s. The gift card would help with our next project. Love the stepping stone too.

  5. What a neat idea. I’ve been wanting some way to mark where our dog is buried and this would be perfect.

  6. The stepping stones are great! And, thanks for a chance to win a Lowe’s gift card. I have my eye on a storage shed to keep my yard & gardening supplies all in one place, and a gift card would help out with that purchase (now if only I could get help with assembling it 🙂 ).

  7. What a great idea with the footprints. I am going to do this with my grandchildren every year so I can watch them grow. Thanks for the chance to win
