Stepping stones are a great way to add some useful character to your backyard. Let children join in the fun of making their own DIY stepping stones.

Grab a bag of concrete and some plastic pot saucers from your local Lowe’s. You will also need some rock, shells or mosaic tiles. We found our decorative mosaic tiles at Michaels. Mix the concrete according to package directions. We had to guess how much we needed for our three stepping stones (about 1/3 of an 80lb bag). We added water to the concrete until it looked like a really thick milk shake. Once mixed immediately pour into the plastic saucers.

Now for the fun part! Wait about five minutes and then press pieces of glass, tile, shells or rocks into the concrete. Water will start to settle on the top of the concrete. It may be blotted up with a paper towel if you like.

Kids will have fun making their own designs and will be so proud when they see their stepping stones right in their own yard.

Don’t miss the opportunity to preserve those sweet feet and hands!

When concrete is dry and hard remove the stepping stone from the plastic saucer. Allow stone to completely dry before using. Be sure to check package directions for curing time of the concrete.

Would you like to add some fun to your backyard?
Disclosure: Loweโs provided me with a gift card for supplies.

That is such a good idea.. to use hands or feet and maybe add the year. And you can make them as big or small.
I love Lowe’s. We go there all the time and this project would be great to do with my grandchildren.
Awesome! Perfect timing, now if I could actually win a giveaway. We are wanting to make some stepping stones to replace the ugly path we have now, we are thinking of using a huge leaf for the imprint.

What a great project idea! I would love to do this with my Kindergarten students next year – wouldn’t it be a nice Mother’s or Father’s Day gift??
Currently redoing my backyard and my kids are grown and gone. Would love to do a stone in honor of each of them in my garden.
We did this exact same project with the girls a couple months ago. We bought the concrete but then used things around the house to decorate the stones, including fancy pebbles they’ve collect, marbles, sea shells, etc. Lots of fun — we’ve been wanting to buy some more concrete and get busy again!
