Hey there, Skippers!  It’s Char here from Crap I’ve Made.  I was super excited when Cindy asked me to participate in her teacher appreciation gift ideas series. Teacher Appreciation Week is the first week in May, and these cute scissors are a simple way to show how much you appreciate your teacher!
Embarrassing confession, though:  I’ve never actually appreciated a teacher. I mean, I’ve appreciated a teacher, I just haven’t ever done anything about it.  Who sucks?  (Hint: me)

Cute Scissors for Teacher Appreciation Week

As teacher appreciation ideas go, giving classroom scissors is a really practical gift. We all know that the cost of teacher supplies add up, and many teachers pay for things themselves – especially stuff like scissors that tend to get borrowed and misplaced as the school year goes on… Scissors are also one of those things that a teacher, regardless of the grade or subject they teach, just has to have on hand in their classroom.
So these spiffy scissors are perfect because the embellishments reflect your teacher’s personal style, and they’re paired with a tag to let them know you think they’re “a cut above the rest.” Here’s all you need to put this gift together:
Supplies:
Scissors – I like heavy-duty craft scissors, which come in a variety of colors.
Patterned paper – Scrapbooking paper offers a great variety to coordinate with the handle colors.
E6000 – This adhesive will bond the paper to the metal scissor blades.
Sandpaper or a nail file – You’ll use this for cleaning up paper edges.
Mod Podge Dimensional Magic – This creates a flawless seal over the paper.
I picked papers that coordinated with these craft scissor handles.

Embellishing the scissor blades

First, cut out pieces of paper the size of the scissor blades. I traced around the individual scissor blades lightly on the backsides of my paper. The pieces of paper don’t need to be exact, but the closer the better.

Next, use some E6000 to adhere the paper to the scissor blades. A little goes a long way! Carefully place the paper onto the blades and smooth it from the center out.

Be sure to get the E6000 all the way to the edges. Trust me on this.
Next, using a nail file or some sandpaper, sand off the excess paper.  Sand down (i.e. towards the metal).

See how much nicer that looks?

Move to a “safe” surface (I used a junky old IKEA cutting board) and apply an even thin layer of Dimensional Magic to one of the scissor blades. This is a clear coat that totally seals the paper to the metal blade. Before you apply the sealant, make sure you’ve cleaned off any little particles left from filing or sanding the paper!

Now let it dry for about 3 hours, and then flip it over to do the other blade.

The Dimensional Magic dries clear and makes a beautiful, uniform finish. They look pretty professional, right?

“A Cut Above” Teacher Appreciation scissors gift

Now for the gift-wrapping and finishing touches. I had a happy little accident when I discovered that disposable icing bags were a perfect fit for the scissors.

The blades fit perfectly down in the triangle icing bags. Then I tied them with some ribbon and tags – I used the print & cut option on my Silhouette and made tags with the same patterned paper I embellished the scissors with – but you can make them however you want.

Just like that, you’ve got a whole assortment of fancy scissors to give all the great teachers in your school! And I solemnly swear that I will publicly thank teachers for the rest of my life.
