What Is The Prayer Shawl Ministry?
The Prayer Shawl Ministry is rooted in a simple yet profound idea: using handmade shawls to share comfort and peace. It began in 1998 when the founders of the prayer shawl ministry, Janet Severi Bristow and Victoria Galo, both graduates of the Women’s Leadership Institute at Hartford Seminary, started the first prayer shawl ministry. They saw knitting and crocheting as spiritual practices, a way to weave intention and prayer into every stitch.
“Shawls … made for centuries universal and embracing,

symbolic of an inclusive, unconditionally loving, God.
They wrap, enfold, comfort, cover, give solace,
mother, hug, shelter and beautify.
Those who have received these shawls have been
uplifted and affirmed, as if given wings to
fly above their troubles…”

Words of the Prayer Shawl Ministry
Since then, the Prayer Shawl Ministry has spread worldwide, with people gathering to make shawls for those going through challenging times, celebrating new beginnings, or simply needing a reminder that theyโre not alone. Each shawl is crafted with love, and itโs often blessed or prayed over before being gifted, creating a connection between the maker and the recipient.
Joining a Prayer Shawl Ministry means becoming part of a larger tradition of compassion and support, where each stitch is a small but heartfelt prayer. Whether youโre a seasoned crafter or new to knitting, this ministry offers a way to give warmth, love, and kindness in a very personal way.
What Is A Prayer Shawl?
A prayer shawl is a handcrafted wrap, often knitted or crocheted, but can also be quilted, made with love and intention. The purpose of a prayer shawl is to offer warmth, comfort, and a sense of peace, providing a gentle reminder that someone cares. Itโs a way to wrap loved ones in a โhugโ during times of need, celebration, or healing, letting them feel supported and loved with each cozy stitch.
Whether they are called Prayer Shawls, Comfort Shawls, Peace Shawls, or Mantles, etc., the shawl maker begins with prayers and blessings for the recipient. The intentions are continued throughout the creation of the shawl. Upon completion, a final blessing is offered before the shawl is sent on its way. Some recipients have continued the kindness by making a shawl and passing it onto someone in need. Thus, the blessing ripples from person-to-person, with both the giver and receiver feeling the unconditional embrace of a sheltering, mothering God!

The shawls can also be crocheted, quilted, woven or machine knitted as well!
Prayer Shawl Poem
Making a prayer shawl is such a personal, cherished experience for me. Each stitch becomes a moment to pray for my friend, reflect on our memories, and remember the blessing of our friendship. I often think of those supporting my friend, too, lifting them up in my thoughts as I work. Itโs a special way to offer my love and support through something handmade, filled with care and thought.

Here is my poem that I share when I make a prayer shawl. I am sharing it with you if you would like to use it. โฅ๏ธ
I have made it for you in two sizes. I print the poem on cardstock and attach it with a ribbon. The smaller one works perfectly to attach like a gift tag.

How to Give a Prayer Shawl
A prayer shawl does not need fancy packaging to feel special. I like to gently fold the shawl, wrap it with a simple piece of ribbon, and attach a prayer shawl poem card printed on cardstock. The poem adds meaning to the gift and lets the person know that the shawl was made with love, prayer, and care.
You can tuck the card under the ribbon or punch a small hole in the corner and tie it directly to the shawl. It is a simple touch, but it makes the gift feel thoughtful and complete. When you give the shawl, you can also include a handwritten note letting them know they are loved, remembered, and being lifted up in prayer.
Prayer Shawl Pattern Ideas
There is a whole world of options when making a prayer shawl. Any of these shawl designs would be a wonderful choice to share a wearable hug. Grab your knitting needles or crochet hook and get ready to make a perfect prayer shawl.

What Size Should a Prayer Shawl Be?
A prayer shawl is typically around 60โ72 inches long and the width of the shawl is 18โ24 inches, which is a comfortable size to wrap around the shoulders or lay across the lap. This size allows for cozy coverage without being too bulky, offering warmth and comfort to the recipient. However, you can adjust the size depending on personal preference or need.
More Than Just Yarn
A prayer shawl is more than just yarn and stitches; itโs like a warm hug and a shelter for anyone in need of comfort. Whether someone is facing illness, times of stress, bereavement, or challenging medical procedures, these shawls offer a tangible reminder of the care, love, and support that surrounds them. They can also be given in times of celebration, embracing life’s joyful moments. Each shawl becomes a meaningful sign of your love, ready to bring comfort whenever itโs needed most.
