Hi everyone, I’m Becky –designer of Patchwork Posse, where I share easy sewing projects and free quilt patterns!  Today I’m sharing a sling library bag tutorial.

This bag is great for those quick trips to the library.  It is ‘hands free’ allowing the kiddo wearing it to browse the shelves and then stuff the easy front pocket with treasured choices. Besides the library, it would be a great bag for hikes, outings, or hauling things back and forth to friends homes.

The size of the bag can be easily adjusted if needed as well as the length of the strap.   The back of the bag has light weight interfacing to help keep it’s shape and not be floppy when the books are all loaded.

The fabric on the front of the library bag is a panel (fabric is by Blend)– you can substitute this with your favorite quilt block, a panel of your own or fabric print.   On the front I also added an E for my Eliza.  If you’d like to personalize your bag, you can find printable alphabets here.

Set aside for later

Sling Bag:

1)  Pin the front and back pocket pieces together

2)  Sew across the top edge only

3)  Turn right sides out and iron

4)  Sew across the top edge a finishing seam 1/4″

5)  Pin the strap to the top edge of the bag- make sure you don’t twist the strap

6)  Sew the strap in place- 1/8″ seam 1″ from the sides *if you’d like you can sew a setting seam 1/8″ across the top to keep it from shifing in the next step.

7)  Pin the layers– behind pocket, pocket, then the back piece {right sides facing down} and the interfacing.  The pocket will not be as tall as the backing!  Match up the edges along the sides and across the bottom of the bag.

8)  Sew along all four sides, leaving a 3″ opening for turning along the top edge in between the strap– make sure the strap is out the way and doesn’t get in the way of the seam

9)  Snip the corners and turn right sides out

10)  Iron well and sew a long the top edge of the bag to close the hole and add stability to the bag and strap

  1. I love this bag! The fabric really makes it. Can you tell me the name of the fabric and where I can find it? Thank you!

  2. Hmm it seems like your website ate my first comment
(it was super long) so I guess I’ll just sum it up what I submitted and say, I’m thoroughly enjoying your blog.

I too am an aspiring blog blogger but I’m still new to everything.
Do you have any tips for first-time blog writers? I’d certainly appreciate it.
