DIY Personalized Apron {Teacher Appreciation}

Teacher Appreciation Week is the first full week in May. Through all of April I am excited to share some amazing ideas from some of the most wonderful bloggers for my Teacher Appreciation Gift Ideas series! It’s a great month! You will be totally prepared with ideas to thank your teachers!

Here’s  Brooke…
First of all, I am THRILLED to be guest posting over here at Skip to my Lou today! My name is Brooke, and I’m visiting from All Things Thrifty where I love to share fun and thrifty decorating ideas! I have four kiddos of my own, and teacher appreciation week is always a fun week at our house! The kids just LOVE to give their teachers their gifts. Plus it is fun to come up with a unique way to express our gratitude for those GREAT teachers out there!

This year, we decided to make personalized aprons for our teacher gifts! teacher gift idea
I started out with a plain black apron from Wal-Mart. It was less than $3.00. :) invite 013Next, I whipped out my Silhouette CAMEO and designed a graphic for the front!Sihouette screen shotBefore I cut it out onto the flocked heat transfer material, I mirrored the image.Sihouette Screen shot1   Then I cut it out {When I say “I” I mean the amazing Silhouette machine cut it. :) Then I removed all of the extra heat transfer around the graphic.teacher gift idea It turned out soooo cute! It was very fast too!teacher gift ideaThen I turned my iron on the hottest setting and placed a cotton piece of fabric in between the iron and the graphic and pressed hard until the graphic was adhering nicely.  teacher gift ideaIMPORTANT: Don’t remove the clear sheet until it has cooled completely. {I learned this the hard way and some of my graphic came off!} So, take my advice and learn from my mistake.  teacher gift ideaAfter it has cooled, the clear sheet will come right off. teacher gift ideaGo slowly as you remove the clear backing to make sure you have ironed long enough.
If your graphic starts to come off, you need to iron it longer. teacher gift ideaViola! You have a cute, unique teacher gift! Plus the teacher in your life will now have a fun apron to use for many years to come!teacher gift ideateacher gift idea We tied the bad boy with a little piece of netting from the fabric drawer. _DSC0758 The best part was watching the kids give their gifts! The kids’ faces were priceless, and they were soooo proud! Mrs. Yardley and Mrs. Brinkerhoff {in St. George, Utah} are now officially both the “best teachers ever!” {Mrs. Brinkerhoff, below on the right, took a fall at track and field day last week and got a black eye, broke her arm, and had to get stitches by her eye. That is why she is sporting a black eye in the photo.} Oaklyn was so excited to give Mrs. Brinkerhoff her apron that she asked if she would put it on!
