Today I mixed up a batch of cinnamon dough to make a Give Thanks garland.   To make the cinnamon dough, mix 1 bottle (4.25 ounces) of cinnamon with about 3/4 to 1 cup applesauce.  I rolled the dough out about 1/4 inch thick between sheets of plastic wrap. The plastic wrap really makes it easy!  I used 3 1/2 ” alphabet cookie cutters to cut out the letters and a straw to poke holes in the tops of each letter. Now I was in a hurry so  I placed the cut-outs in a very low oven (150 degrees) for about 1 hour on each side. I then strung the letters on a thin ribbon.

They really weren’t completely dry—–so I had a couple break when I hung the garland.  I simply hot glued them back onto the ribbon.  If I was going to do this again I might just forgo the holes and hot glue the letters to the ribbon. Either way I am sure it would work better if the letters were completely dry.  This garland does make my kitchen smell delicious!

  1. The recipe I have also uses white glue. I think that would help your breakage problem. I can’t find it so I was looking at yours.

  2. When I made this, I used elmers glue in the mixture…it keeps the ornaments lasting longer and stronger.

  3. LOVE this idea! What a great craft that the kids can do. I think we are going to make one for Christmas.

  4. Hi, the applesauce in Holland is very liquid and comes mostley out of a jar. Can i use that?? Can you please give me the weights? I don’t understand 1 cup and ounces.. Do tou use cinnamon-powder? And the dough must dry in the oven and thén you cut out the figures???? Many greetings from overseas Holland!

  5. I like this a lot, it’s also great if you substitute some nutmeg, cloves, or allspice for some of the cinnamon.

  6. I made these in my pre-K class with the kids. I added a final touch. I mixed elmer’s glue and cornstarch to make “royal icing” it turned out beautiful and set quickly. The remaining icing is in a nancy bottle and is still soft enough for use. Looks good enough to eat!

  7. We used to make these as Christmas Ornaments when I was a kid. I LOVE the idea of a garland!! I looked a long time last year for the recipe we used to use, so that I could make them with my daughter, but I couldn’t find it in time.

This year, though – it’s on! She’s so creative, I can’t wait to see what great ideas she will come up with!

  8. Thanks for sharing this fantastic idea! I linked to it from my post today.
