How to make a diaper for a child’s doll

Okay this might seem like the craziest gift, but I tell you my little girl is going to adore a stack of these baby doll diapers. Really a diaper is the only 'clothes' our babies wear, if any.

These are very easy to make, but if you want a simple pattern so you don't have to spend time figuring it out you may download the

Baby Doll Diaper Pattern

Instructions for making a diaper for a child's doll:

Cut two pieces of fabric.  I used a soft flannel, in pink of course (in my daughter's eyes there are no other colors).

Stitch the two pieces right sides together.  Leave about a 2 inch opening on the straight edge along the back for turning.

Clip corners and curves.  Turn the fabric right side out.  Whip stitch opening closed.  Sew velcro on the inside of the back flaps and on the outside of the front. I am confusing the you with the picture. Pretend it is flipped over.  Actually this is easy, just lay your diaper out and fold it up and you will see where the velcro goes.  It is probably a good idea to try it on your doll to get the correct velcro placement.

These only take minutes, including the time it takes to re-thread the sewing machine needle when the thread breaks sewing the velcro on (does anyone have any tips for this). My daughter aka "little mommy" will be in heaven with this gift

.

I'm off to think of some ideas for the boys!

Ha – we’ve been using the newborn diapers that come in the mail – but these are super cute! Will definitely have to give it a try!

not crazy at all. I have often thought about whipping up one of these… thanks for doing the thinking part for me! LOL

I’m planning on making several baby doll diapers for O for Christmas, so thanks for the tutorial!

Faced with a toddler who kept wanting me to change invisible diapers on stuffed animals, and then claiming I hadn’t done it, I made stuffed animal diapers out of polarfleece (cut shape, sew on velcro, hand to child). Voila! Diapers that are different colors so you can prove you’ve changed them.

This is a great idea. It reminds me of a gift that my grandmother gave to my little girls (her great-grandchildren). She has a lot of grandchildren and great-grandchildren so she must be creative and frugal with her gift-giving. One year she bought terry-cloth (I think she got it by the yard but you could also use cheap bath towels) and cut them in to little rectangles and smaller squares-they were baby doll bath towels and washclothes. My girls LOVED that these were REAL towels for their babies and I loved that my grandma was thoughtful enough to think of a gift for my girls, no matter how small.

Thank you for this!! I’ve been meaning to make some doll diapers and just haven’t gotten around to it. Now I am inspired! I just found this site and like it already. Thanks again for the pattern and tutorial. :)

  14. Thanks so much for the cute tutorial! I just started making some dolls for my nieces for Christmas, so this will come in handy. As for the velcro sewing dilemma, Velcro sells a heat-activated adhesive version called FabricFusion. You just iron it on and it bonds permenently! Better than sliced bread if you ask me!

  15. Sheila says:

These are so cute. Thank you so much for the pattern! I have made 4 of them so far: 2 each for my 2 daughters, a blue and pink one for each girl. I had flannel scraps that were perfect. Thank you so much for all your patterns and links! I have made several things but hadn’t commented before, and I wanted to rectify that. I appreciate you!

I made 3 of these the other day and my 3 year old loves them!!! Thanks for the tutorial.

You’ve just made my day … and there will be a very happy little 6 year old on Christmas Day!

    Off to find velcro…

  18. Jennifer says:

Thanks for posting this! My daughter keeps asking me to make her doll more cloth diapers, but I have been so lazy to draw a template myself. Thanks for saving me time!

Thank you for this pattern! Its inspired me to make a doll diaper bag and stock it with diapers, a wet bag, changing pad, and mini burp cloths. My girls are going to love these for Christmas. I’ve made the diapers already and they fit our Bitty Baby perfectly. I zig zag stitched the velcro on and didn’t have any trouble. I also turned and top stitched the whole thing rather than hand sew the opening and I think it turned out great! Thank you!

  22. Barbara says:

Will this diaper fit a Lee Middleton Newborn Nursery doll (the kind you “adopt” from the nursery)? I think the doll is 19 inches long.

    Many thanks!

  23. Patti says:

Thanks so much for sharing and making it easy to give my granddaughter a homemade gift for her dolly.

  24. jesse says:

Thanks so much for the pattern. I have been searching for these type of diapers in the stores. I bought some similiar for my daughter 15 yrs ago. Can no longer find them and was having a hard time trying to draw the pattern myself. These will make great gifts for my great nieces. They love the one that I saved from 15yrs ago. Lots better than wasting $ on the disposalable doll diapers (unless for a baby alive which has to be changed after eating!!)

  25. jesse says:

Note: you can make veloco a little longer on each side to adjust to babydoll size of sew velcro across the entire front piece.

  26. Becky says:

I’m so making these for my granddaughters!!!

  27. Chrissy says:

Thank you! It’s hard to find doll diapers, and expensive too! I buy old dolls in need of TLC and then fix them up and give them to the nieces. I got the idea to make the diapers, but wasn’t sure where to start.

  28. corri says:

im am totally making my daughters dolls these for a last min Christmas gift! it will be on my blog tomorrow night i just did you crayon roll too thats on my blog now so if you want to see them go check them out! thanks for the tuts. keep them coming!

  29. Kim says:

As a preschool teacher – these are amazing!!! My little students often ask me to change diapers, hold, cuddle, feed their “babies” etc. I am going to make a STACK of these!!
    Thanks!!

  30. Sarah says:

Hello. Great tutorial :) I know these will fit a Bitty Baby sized doll but will it also work on a Baby Alive? My 4yo just recieved one and the way she will go through diapers with eating and drinking will be a lot :)

I made the mistake of buying my 20mo old a drink and wet doll for x-mas, and she lost the diaper that came with it. The replacement diapers are too expensive for how few you get and I don’t want to go out and buy preemie diapers. This pattern is perfect! I can whip out tons of these in no time and it won’t cost me an arm and a leg!
    Thanks so much!!!

  32. Lois says:

These are great, I going to make some for a friend for her 2nd birthday! A suggestion for the velcro though(I noticed you were looking for ideas to get around the tread breaking) use the gel type super glue instead of sewing them on! There nothing wrong with cheating when it comes to sewing!

  33. Jennifer says:

Just what I was looking for. I agree that it is simple, but made worlds easier with your handy template. Thank you so much!

  34. Sara says:

Thanks for the pattern. I thought I was done buying diapers, and then my mom bought my daughter a Baby Alive…

PS- to sew through Velcro without breaking your needle use a heavy duty needle. They may also be labeled Denim/Corduroy.

  35. kira says:

I can’t wait to make this for our “little momma”!

  36. Thank you, thank you, thank you! My 2 year old daughter and 4 year old son have been wasting my daughter’s size 4 diapers to put them on her baby dolls. I’m going to make some of these this weekend for her! :)

  39. Veta says:

Thanks! I am going to make some to use for a baby shower game for my oldest daughter’s first baby. She is having a girl so I will definitely be using the pattern again when she gets old enough to play with dolls!
    It is a great idea!

  40. Libby Meyer says:

I put a copy of the diaper pattern in my craft file so I will always have it.
With 4 granddaughters ages 6 and under, I’m going to make a stack for each of their houses and mine! Thank you for the super-quick pattern.

  41. Kristen says:

Thank you! I have had this bookmarked for awhile now, since I knew my mother was buying a Bitty Baby for my daughter’s birthday. Now she has a couple of diapers that are a lot nicer than the one the doll came with. Thanks again!

This is a great idea! We have some like that at home. We actually cloth diaper the real kids, too, and as for a suggestion about the velcro…why not try snaps! You can use one of those hand-held snap presses from the fabric store and add some metal snaps. Or, you can add resin snaps – these kind are on cloth diapers. The resin snaps are much cheaper and super good quality but might be a little hard for little fingers to unsnap. We prefer snaps on our cloth diapers over the velcro. :)

  46. Instead of sewing the velcro, I buy stick on velcro dots, very durable, washable and oh so quick and easy.

  47. Jennie Bentham says:

I’ve just made 2 of these for baby Annabell as I am fed up of my daughter using her her own nappies and then throwing them away! I had to alter the pattern slightly, Annabell has a larger bottom than the pattern allowed for. I also cut out a duck and a teddy bear from felt to put on the front of each one. Thanks for the pattern and the idea, they were an instant hit and soooooo easy to make.
