Today is National Make Your Bed Day…

Posted by  ·  September 11, 2009  ·  Last Updated: September 11, 2009

…so we are celebrating with custom pillowcases and made beds (well some of us are — remember I also have teen boys)!

FabricMarkers3

To make our custom pillowcase we used Crayola Fabric Markers (I found them at Michael’s Arts & Crafts and used a coupon) and a plain white pillowcase.

FabricMarkers1

These markers are great! Bella literally spent hours working on her pillowcase.  She is really into hearts as you can see!  She asked me to draw a heart shape. The pillowcase was thin enough that I slipped a paper with a heart drawn on it in the middle and she could see it well enough to trace.  It would be fun to use coloring book pictures as templates also.  A child could easily decorate anyway they like, but if they seem intimidated have them make a drawing first on paper and then they can trace it.

** Make  sure you place a piece of cardboard inside the pillowcase to keep the markers from bleeding through to the other side. Read package directions for setting the fabric.**

FabricMarkers2

Really the possibilities are endless for this craft—- slumber party or birthday crafts, gifts, etc.. They could even be further embellished with bits of fabric, trims and embroidery.

Bella loves her new pillowcase!

FabricMarkers4

If you would like to try out these awesome fabric markers please leave a comment on this post before Tuesday at midnight CST. Crayola is giving FIVE lucky readers a set of fabric markers!

Oh my, markers for fabric...how fun are those. I guess there are already markers for fabric, but they are not Crayola our favorite brand in this house. My 7 year old and I would love to use these for a sleep over art project. The pillow case coloring is a great idea, thanks.

I have seen these, but never tried them. It would so much fun to 'create' with these!
  45. Saturday, September 12th, 2009
I am a little wary of what my toddler would do with markers that aren't supposed to wash out. Then again, we never let her play with markers. It might a cute present for grandparents hand decorated by their favorite little terror.
  46. Saturday, September 12th, 2009
Those markers are so neat. I'm totally dreaming of all the things I -- and *we* -- could create with those.

    Thanks for sharing.
  56. Friday, September 11th, 2009
Nifty! I don't care one whit about making beds (they're just gonna get messy again, anyway, lol!) but I dig the idea of custom made pillowcases. Sign me up for a box, please.

This is a wonderful idea! I have a soon to be 5 year old that's really into wanting to make her own things that aren't' always exactly like her 3 year old sister's things. It would be a neat thing to do for her 5th birthday party to have each child make their own, or even she have her own to make and keep each year, or should I say, me, to keep in her hope chest each year. Very cute idea and I would love a set of these markers!

We actually found Crayola pillow case and fabric crayon sets at Bed, Bath, and Beyond and colored them monday night. My oldest daughter picked out the butterfly pillowcase and my youngest picked out dinosaur. It suits their personalities perfect. We had so much fun coloring them as a family and then we traced around their hands on the back and put the date so they will be great keepsakes!

    Friday, September 11th, 2009
How have I missed these markers? My girls are 6 and 4 and would LOVE this project! I especially like the idea of holiday/seasonal pillow cases. What a fun rainy-day craft idea.

To address the issue of skin sensitivity, you could leave one side unadorned and have the child flip the pillow to the plain side for sleeping.
  99. Friday, September 11th, 2009
Oh, yes! We would love to try some. We love crayola and we love fabric. How fun to combine them!

This would be something I would really like to do with them and I know they would enjoy. They are so proud of there little paper and coloring projects, they would be blown away with a pillow case THEY made and could use! Thanks for sponsoring the give-a-way!

It is interesting to try these fabric markers. I doubt I will use it for the pillow case especially for the child - it may cause allergy. Direct contact with the skin for several hours at night.Crayola is a famous and high quality brand, but....better safe than sorry. Decorating clothes seems the best for me. Another thing to consider - hand -washing or machine-washing?
  115. Friday, September 11th, 2009
That looks like allot of fun! And I am not talking about for the kids, I am talking about me! LOL! Sure hope I win one of these!

And your daughter did a great job! And she is cute too! My granddaughters' name is Isabella!

I love the pillowcase. I would love to have my 10 and 11 year old girls in class at church make these pillowcases. These markers would be wonderful for that. I didn't know they had these fabric markers but they will definitely be useful to me.

I had already planned to have our Daisy Girl Scout troop decorate pillowcases at their December pj party and now I know just how to do it and what markers to use. Winning a set would certainly help our small craft supply budget. Thank you for the great information!

These are awesome! My kids did a similar project using handkerchiefs (they also did pillow cases) when we were on a cruise. They had the best time coloring their projects. The pillow cases have been washed & they lovingly remember their cruise when they use those cases!

I may use a plain tablecloth for the "kids" table at Christmas & let the kids decorate it with the markers. How awesome would that be for an annual reminder of their youth!
