I was looking for a quick way to give my kitchen some Valentine’s Day bling so I made some embellished tea towels. This darling Valentine Hoop Art would be another fun way to dress up your home for Valentine’s Day.

I had everything I needed in my stash –tea towels ( from IKEA left over from another project), Heat N Bond Lite, bits of fabric, ribbon and trim.

To make the applique I drew  hearts on the paper side of the Heat n’ Bond lite. Next, iron it to the WRONG side of the fabric. (If appliqueing a letter or number it must be drawn in reverse on the paper.)

Cut out the hearts.

Peel the paper from the fabric hearts. There will be a layer of glue on the backs of the hearts.

Stack up the hearts and iron to the tea towel. Stitch around the edges. After washing the edges might start to fray. If this is not okay, go around the edges with Fray Check.

Sew trim across the bottom of the towel.

Don’t want to applique? Sewing a ribbon across the bottom of the towel is another simple way to dress it up.

  1. I just wanted to say when I bought the heat and bond, I bought the heavy kind. Then I realized if you sew through it , it can gum up your needle. It actually says on directions to not for sewing. So I went back and got the light one which does not glue but it does help make the heart stiff and easier to deal with. Also I used the flour sack towels from target for a good price. I was hesitant to use white thread to sew the red heart, knowing my imperfect lines would show up, so I used red on the heart and white so the red didn’t show through on the back of the towel. I also used red thread to sew on the trim at the bottom.

  4. I just wanted to say that I also have those towels from Ikea and the waffle pattern on them really bunches up after washing and drying. The towel becomes very bumpy. Well at least mine do! just some FYI.
