Freezer paper stencils are an easy way to make cute t-shirts. With St Patrick’s Day right around the corner we thought we would use this fun technique to give us some special protection!

Freezer Paper Stencil Tutorial

Draw design on paper side of the freezer paper, shiny side of freezer paper facing down. I have included the template I used. I  cut the stencil with my Silhouette Cutter, but an exacto knife works also.

Iron freezer paper shiny side down onto t-shirt. This doesn’t take much —about 30 seconds on medium heat. Check to make sure freezer paper  is completely adhered to the shirt. Don’t forget to also iron the center parts into the letters. Notice I forgot the center of the first letter p.

Following directions on the bottle mix  fabric painting medium 2:1 into acrylic paint. You will also want some amazing DecoArt Glamour Dust for embellishing the t-shirt.

Apply paint to stencil and sprinkle wet paint with Glamour Dust. I  was glamming up the shamrocks, but wish I had sprinkled it on the whole stencil. This stuff is so cool and gives such a professional finish!

Flip over and remove extra Glamour Dust. Remove stencil.

Allow paint to dry 48 hours (only 24  is necessary if only using paint and not Glamour Dust), then heat set the paint by ironing over design for 30 seconds on medium heat.

No pinching allowed!

  3. Looks fantastic!!! Do you have any tricks to cut freezer paper with the Silhouette? I tried a while back and the paper stuck to the matte and ripped everywhere.

  4. Adorable! 🙂 I’ve never tried “glamour dust” – it looks great! I’m going to look for it the next time I have a painting project! Thanks for sharing! 🙂

  5. Thanks for the great idea. I just made 2 t shirts for my twin girls. Only made 1 mistake – when I read “freezer paper” my mind read Wax paper. So instead of an easy to use stencil, I had a harder to use tracing guide. Painted the t shirts by hand – pink t shirts with chartreuse green lettering. They look pretty good, if I do say so myself!

  6. I loved this idea. I had my hubby pick up freezer paper on the way home from work and made it that night. I even made a pair of pants to match. They turned out awesome! I have since made a couple other outfits using the freezer paper. Thanks for sharing the great ideas!!!

  7. Very cool! I am going to try to make a “Girls Rock” t-shirt with an electric guitar. Wish me luck! Thank you so much. LOVE YOUR SITE!
