Stepping stones are a great way to add some useful character to your backyard. Let children join in the fun of making their own DIY stepping stones.

Grab a bag of concrete and some plastic pot saucers from your local Lowe’s. You will also need some rock, shells or mosaic tiles. We found our decorative mosaic tiles at Michaels. Mix the concrete according to package directions. We had to guess how much we needed for our three stepping stones (about 1/3 of an 80lb bag). We added water to the concrete until it looked like a really thick milk shake. Once mixed immediately pour into the plastic saucers.

Now for the fun part! Wait about five minutes and then press pieces of glass, tile, shells or rocks into the concrete. Water will start to settle on the top of the concrete. It may be blotted up with a paper towel if you like.

Kids will have fun making their own designs and will be so proud when they see their stepping stones right in their own yard.

Don’t miss the opportunity to preserve those sweet feet and hands!

When concrete is dry and hard remove the stepping stone from the plastic saucer. Allow stone to completely dry before using. Be sure to check package directions for curing time of the concrete.

Disclosure: Lowe’s provided me with a gift card for supplies.

  1. Love it! Could you tell me where you got those letter tiles from? They look great!

  2. I am sure you could put in a plastic bag but we put their prints right in the cement without any issue.

  3. When making prints, how do you protect a young child’s foot or hand from chemical burns?

  4. Place plastic wrap over it so it dries slowly. That should prevent it from craking

  5. You should always protect your skin when using concrete. That is very important!
