How to make stepping stones

Posted by  ·  June 30, 2012  ·  Last Updated: June 30, 2012

Stepping stones are a great way to add some useful character to your backyard. Let children join in the fun of making their own DIY stepping stones.

Grab a bag of concrete and some plastic pot saucers from your local Lowe’s. You will also need some rock, shells or mosaic tiles. We found our decorative mosaic tiles at Michaels. Mix the concrete according to package directions. We had to guess how much we needed for our three stepping stones (about 1/3 of an 80lb bag). We added water to the concrete until it looked like a really thick milk shake. Once mixed immediately pour into the plastic saucers.

Now for the fun part! Wait about five minutes and then press pieces of glass, tile, shells or rocks into the concrete. Water will start to settle on the top of the concrete. It may be blotted up with a paper towel if you like.

Kids will have fun making their own designs and will be so proud when they see their stepping stones right in their own yard.

Don’t miss the opportunity to preserve those sweet feet and hands!

When concrete is dry and hard remove the stepping stone from the plastic saucer. Allow stone to completely dry before using. Be sure to check package directions for curing time of the concrete.

Would you like to add some fun to your backyard?

Disclosure: Lowe’s provided me with a gift card for supplies.

You should always protect your skin when using concrete. That is very important!

I also used concrete with the "jello" molds that were given away when I bought Jello. I especially liked the flag mold. We left some plain and painted some . I loved the old- fashioned blue and dark blue colors best. The hardest part was the stars. Love your website !!

I'm curious if the plastic pot saucers are ruined after you use them to make these or did they withhold the concrete to be able to be used again?

If you spray it with Pam or a non slick spray, you might be able to reuse them. I would suggest buying the silicone baking ware so you can reuse it and it will be easy to remove the baking ware plus, you can buy different shapes for the seasons. You can go to a thrift store and find metal tin pans or jello molds to make garden friends. There is a half round mold that is about 6 to 8" long you can spray, add the concreat, and make a caterpillar out of it. You can make Fairy houses by making a getting a smaller glass or tin bowl, spray it with Pam, add concrete, get another small bowl, spray the bottom of it and place I think inside the other bowl but make sure the concrete is at least a 1/2" thick, slide a coated spoon or a 1 tablespoon measuring spoon in between the 1/2" thickness to make an arched door for the little people or fairy's, you can add windows buy buying little mirror or see through tiles along the wall of the outside bowl before adding the concrete filling is added. Be creative. Add a sky light or pretty glow rocks. After your cute creative home is done, add some green moss. Get some cute silicon cookie cutter shapes, small strong wire, insert the wire into the cookie cutter mold, paint it and stick it in your little people's garden or town. Enjoy! Creativity is endless on only limited by our own structured mind.

I love this idea. I have been thinking about this very thing with my grandchildren. Where do you get the letter tiles? Lowes too? I also wanted to somehow put a picture of each child into it, maybe with clear plastic on top, but don't really know how. Any ideas?

I want to make these with my grandkids and write their names or message on them.Do you have any idea what to write with that won't leave rough edges?
    • Tuesday, March 4th, 2014
Hi Mae, I have seen concrete stamps at the craft store. I don't think those letter stamps would leave sharp edges.

Depending on the concrete mix you get you may not have time to put those things on top. I am going to put my pieces face down in the container then pout the concrete over the top. The bottom will be the top of the finished piece
