Hello, Skip to My Lou readers! I’m Marigold and I have a little blog on the other side of the Internet called Hideous! Dreadful! Stinky! where I share my love of DIY and working with my hands. You’ll find craft and simple sewing projects there for kids and adults that are quirky, fun, artful and functional. I’m excited to be here today for the Fun Crafts for Kids series to share my Hipster Toy Camera with a changeable “digital” photo display on the back. Here we go!

Small black jewelry box, approx. 4” x 4” x 1”
Duct tape (silver, blue)
30” grosgrain ribbon
Jar lid (hazelnut spread, peanut butter, etc.)

Scissors
Craft knife
Hot glue or strong craft glue

Start with a small square box. I used a jewelry box, but any box that’s about 4” square will work. Glue it shut and paint it black (or desired color), if it isn’t already. Put a piece of silver duct tape across the top, overlapping the edges.

Glue a 30” piece of grosgrain ribbon to the sides to make a neck strap. Duct tape along the top edge of the box, covering the ribbon ends and making a silver stripe around the entire top of the box.

To make the lens, place a couple of pieces of duct tape over the jar lid. Use a sharp craft knife to cut off excess tape to make a circle “lens.”

Glue the lens to the center front of the box. Use a black permanent marker to draw lens details and a viewfinder. Glue a water bottle lid to the top as a shutter.

Flip the camera over and cover the back with silver duct tape.

Place the clear acetate sheet or pouch on the back and tape down the sides and bottom. Tip: cut a small half-circle notch in the top of the pouch/acetate to make it easier for little fingers to slide photos in and out.

That’s it! Your Hipster Toy Camera is ready for play! Switch out printed photos, or draw pictures on 3” x 3” cardstock.
