God’s Eye Craft

My daughter learned how to make them at summer camp and is thrilled to show you how to make them.  I also remember loving to make them when I was in Sunday School. They are the perfect mess-free kids’ craft! This project is also a great way to use up scraps of yarn.

Supplies for God’s Eye

  • yarn in many colors
  • two wooden sticks the same length  (We used tree branches, but popsicle sticks or dowel rods would also work)
  • scissors

How to make a God’s Eye

Follow this step by step tutorial and you know how to make a beautiful Ojo de Dios.

To make it easier to start weaving, fasten sticks together with a rubber band.  Sticks could also be fastened with hot glue.

Hold the end of the yarn on top of the wood and wrap yarn around the stick catching the end.

Wrap all the way around the stick then move under the next stick. Wrap all the way around that stick then move to the next stick. Always bring the yarn under the stick before wrapping around.

When you want to change colors simply cut the yarn and tie on a new color and begin wrapping again.

When finished tie the end of the yarn to the stick where you ended. Push any end pieces where two colors were tied together to the back.

More about the Ojo de Dios

Where did God’s eye originate?

The “Ojo de Dios” or God’s Eye is an ancient symbol made by the Huichol Indians of Mexico.  The Huichol not only make wonderfully colorful God’s Eyes from yarn, but they also make yarn paintings by gluing yarn to wooden boards. You might like this yarn painting craft for kids.

Why are they called God’s eyes?

The Huichol  Indians made these decorative, ceremonial shields with colored yarn and sticks. These shields were called god’s eyes because through them a god might keep a watchful eye over the people who made them.

What is an Ojo de Dio?

It is a ritual tool that was believed to protect those while they pray.  The central eye was made when a child was born. Each year, a bit of yarn was added until the child turned five at which point the Ojo was complete.  The wooden cross the yarn is woven on represents the four directions: earth, fire, water, and air.
