Thankfully, a charming banner doesn’t have to require any fancy tools or cutters. In fact, all I use is scissors, glue, fun papers, and my Printable Banner Template to make a banner for any occasion.

Here is what you need:

  • Cardstock and/or patterned paper to coordinate with your occasion
  • Pre-cut letters to spell out your desired phrase
  • String or ribbon
  • Printable Banner Template – DOWNLOAD HERE!
  • Tools: scissors, glue or tape adhesive, hole punch, paper trimmer (optional)

How To Use This Banner Template

What I love about this banner template is that you can use any paper you want for your banner. Want to make a baby banner? Print the template onto sweet baby paper. Need a graduation banner? Feed school-colored paper through your printer. Today, I am making a quick banner for a soccer kick-off party using this fun soccer ball paper I found at my local craft store.

Start with any scrapbook paper or cardstock you like. If your paper is 12×12” (like mine), first trim it down to printer size (typically 8.5×11”) using either scissors or paper trimmer.

Next, download the Printable Banner Template and determine which size you want your pennants to be. I’ve provided full-sheet size all the way down to mini size, but you can also adjust the size of your pennants in the print options (just adjust the % size you want). Also note how many pennants you will need for your desired phrase to figure out how many pages of the template you need to print.

Make sure you feed the paper into the printer so that the template is printed onto the back of your patterned paper and print as many as you need.

Next, use a paper trimmer and/or scissors to trim out each pennant on the light grey lines.

Once your pennants are trimmed out, you have lots of options for customizing and decorating your banner. To give my banners more visual interest and weight, I like to add a solid color matting behind each pennant. However, I don’t bother with measuring or printing out more pennant templates. I simply glue the patterned pennants directly onto cardstock and leave at least a ¼”ish boarder all the way around. I then repeat the cutting process around each pennant (using either a paper trimmer or scissors) to leave a consistent border around each flag.

The patterned paper banner is cute and all, but it doesn’t convey much without some letters! I like to stock up on pre-cut letters whenever I see them (my favorite sources are Michaels, Target Dollar Spot, and Marshalls) to keep projects like this one super quick and easy!

If you find sticker letters, then you can just stick them right onto your banner. Otherwise, use glue or roller adhesive to adhere your letters to the front and center of each pennant.

Last but not least, it’s time to punch some holes and string the pennants together! Use a hole punch to put a hole in each corner, and then feed a ribbon, string, or thread through the holes. Depending on if you start from back-to-front or front-to-back, you can determine if you see your ribbon across each pennant or if it runs across the back!

  1. Thanks for the tip about how layering can go a long way in beautifying a banner. My sister is thinking about getting a banner printing service soon because she’s been planning to open her own daycare center soon. Having some decorative but also informative displays would be helpful for parents who are visiting.
