Fabric Clutch Pattern by The Sewing Loft

How to make a clutch purse

Materials:

  • (2) 10 1/2″ x 8″ fabric scraps
  • (1) 10 1/2″ x 8″ piece of fusible fleece
  • (1) 12″ x 1 3/4″ piece of fabric
  • (2) sets of snaps- or alternate closure
  • steam a seam
  • pattern template
  • funky alphabet template (optional)

Tools:

  • sewing machine
  • basic sewing supplies

Basic Instructions:

1. Download and print the pattern template.  Prepare main fabric by attaching fusible fleece .*Note: Instructions vary on different brands of fusible so be sure to refer to the packaging.

2. Cut out fabric clutch pattern from main fabric and lining. Consider adding an all over quilting stitch or decorative stitching to the main fabric. Now, is the time to personalize! I added a simple initial applique with zig zag stitching to personalize this gift.

3. Cut wrist strap fabric 12″ x 1 3/4″. Fold into thirds. Use Steam a Seam and iron to adhere in place on each fold. Add decorative stitching down center if desired. Fold in half lengthwise to create a 6″ piece. *Note: You can add seam allowance to create a clean finish but this will require additional time. for turning.

4. Position the strap on the left side 1″ above the bottom edge. Sandwich strap between the main fabric and lining with right sides together, pin in place. Starting 1 1/2″ away from the bottom corner of case, straight stitch all around to the other side.  Leave a 3″ – 3 1/2″ opening for turning. Clip corners.

5. Turn right side out and press.  Push out corners as needed to create a crisp corner.

6. Fold under the seam allowance at opening, press and edge stitch closed.

7. Flip up the bottom straight edge of to match the fold line on pattern. (Approximately 3 3/4″.) Pin sides in place and all around straight stitch 1/4″ from edge.

8. Mark snap placements and attach snaps as per manufactures instructions.
