This DIY cake stand is an easy project that can be made to fit any color scheme. This pretty cake stand will elevate your cake to the next level.
Today I am highlighting the Pantone spring color of 2014, Radiant Orchid. It is fun to use these Pantone colors in projects.
Related: Previously I used the Pantone spring color of 2013 to make a DIY Lemonade Stand.
If you are needing a way to showcase that cake for your next party grab some tools and let me show you how to build this wooden cake pedestal.
Supplies for the DIY cake stand
- 2 thin pieces of 3/16 inch finished plywood (10-inch squares)
- about a 4 3/4 inch square with a routed edge
- about a 3 3/4 inch square with a routed edge (you can also use millwork accent blocks or pieces of wood found at the craft store
- 2 -2 1/2 inch wood screws
- drill
- fine grit sandpaper
- wood filler
- paint
- paint brush
- wood glue
- heavy objects or clamps
- 1 wooden deck spindle 2X2X36″
- 1 package of dollhouse trim (found at the craft store)
- saw.
How to build a wooden square cake stand
- Cut a piece from the middle of the wooden spindle with a saw.
- Drill pilot holes in each of the routed square pieces and also the spindle.
- Stack the wooden squares together and place the spindle on top. Screw these three pieces together from the bottom of the largest square. Counter-sink the screw.
- Screw one piece of the finished plywood to the top of the pedestal.
- Glue the second piece of finished plywood to the first piece of finished plywood. I used Gorilla Glue, but I think Elmer’s wood glue would work just as well and be easier to handle. Remember, Gorilla Glue expands so it is very important to clamp the pieces together or use heavy objects to weigh the boards together. I flipped the cake stand over and placed my drill on it and books on the base.
- Once completely dry cut strips of the doll house trim and glue around the edge.
- Fill in any spaces on the top where the molding met the plywood with wood filler. Allow drying then sand.
- Sand the entire cake stand.
- Give the cake stand a couple of coats of your favorite Pantone color.
- Now you are ready for any party color scheme.
Note
If you have any food safety concerns I place my cakes on a cake board so the cake is not directly touching the painted area.
