Stitch Abbreviations/Terminology:

  • Magic ring → mr
  • Chain → ch
  • Stitch →st
  • Slip stitch → sl st
  • Single crochet → sc
  • Half double crochet → hdc
  • Double crochet → dc
  • Space (created by chs in previous round) → sp

Important for this Crochet Egg Pattern:

  • For this project, we use fine cotton yarn and an E/4 hook – the thinner the yarn, the more colorful the egg will become. When using thinner yarn, additional increasing rounds should be added or sts changed from hdc to dc and dc to trc.
  • In rounds 2-4, ch2/ch3 count as separate sts.
  • How to switch to a different color yarn in a new round: slip knot on the hook, insert hook in the first space/st, yarn over and sc; then continue with the needed chs.
  • The point of your egg: move your marker along in round 5 and 6, so you can easily connect the two sides around the egg later.
  • Switch it up: add a ribbon or crochet cord to the top of the egg cover to hang it on your Easter decoration.

Connecting the pieces:

Place your crochet Easter egg halves around the plastic egg so that the stitch markers (the pointed ends) and all sts align. Using the long tail you left on (at least) one of your cover halves, you can now sew both pieces together.

Option 1: Sew through the outer loops of each st.

Option 2: The so-called “invisible seam stitch”- using the back loops. Insert your needle right in the center of the st (in between the front and back loop) and bring it back out from the center of the next stitch. Then you do the same on next st of the other half. You zigzag through your work, pulling the yarn tight after a few sts – just tight enough to have both pieces sit perfectly on top of each other and hide the little egg inside.

Finish sewing and weave in your ends.
