Conversation Starters

There are 30 questions to start a conversation that are easy and fun to answer. Some might make you think a little bit harder. My favorite question that I cannot wait to ask is “If you had intro music, what would it be and why?” Have fun with the questions!

These conversation questions are the perfect way to get to know your guest just a bit better! Plus you won’t need to ever worry about how to start a conversation!

They are especially great for teenagers who might be just learning how to start a conversation at a social event. It’s a great way to build communication skills at a personal level or as a fun professional development activity. Conversation skills are important for everyone – introverted or not!

How to Use Conversation Starters

Place a question at each person’s plate, or have your guests pull out a question from a small decorative jar. If you have the questions at each plate, you may find the game has begun before everyone is seated. If not, the best thing to do is lead your guests through the ground rules:

  1. Note to the host: if you can, a good idea is to try a seating chart pairing off extroverts with introverts.
  2. Pair off with a conversation partner.
  3. A good conversation starter always begins with a great question. The first thing for one person from each pair to do is read their question, then their partner will answer. This may lead to a deeper conversation and off they go. If the spark doesn’t catch with the first one, then the other person should ask their question.
  4. Encourage your guests to use follow-up questions, or make up some of their own. Give them some guidelines and suggestions such as:
  5. Use open-ended questions
  6. Some of the best conversation starters help you learn more about them, like their favorite song, favorite food, what is their dream job or what do they like to do in their free time. You might simply ask them what is their favorite subject to talk about!
  7. The most important thing to remember is this isn’t a test – have a good time! Listen to their answer and respond naturally.
  8. When it’s your turn, do your best to provide an interesting answer.
